🫒 A big change is coming to feed formulations across the EU: olive extract is leaving the Feed Additive Register for every animal species, and it has raised a lot of questions across the industry.

So we put the five most common questions to Clémence Messant, our Business Development Manager Natural Antioxidants, who breaks each one down clearly, from whether this means olive extract is unsafe for animals, to how long you can use existing stocks for, and what other flavoring additives does the regulation affect, amongst others.

🐟 Aquatic species now have their own mycotoxin limits in the EU, for the very first time. 👀 In our brand-new podcast episode, we explore how the European Commission’s new dedicated values for your sector closes a gap that has stood for years and signals a real shift in how aquaculture needs to think about risk.

For Dr. Rui A. Gonçalves, our Global Business Development Director Aqua, the significance is clear:
“For the first time, the new European Commission guidance explicitly recognizes that mycotoxin management in aquaculture can no longer be ignored. The traditional perception that ‘mycotoxins are not a problem in aquaculture’ may need to be re-thought.”

Why it matters: many cultured aquatic species had little exposure to these compounds over their evolutionary history, so they may not have evolved to cope with them. And as aquafeeds rely more on plant ingredients, exposure only grows, while co-occurrence, emerging mycotoxins and carry-over into edible tissues still need far more attention.

📜 New, stricter rules on mycotoxins: the European Commission has overhauled its guidance values for mycotoxins in feed. If it's still on your "to read properly" list, this one is worth moving up.

The new limits are drastically lower than the ones they replace, in some cases up to ten times stricter.

This isn't a minor revision. Feed that read as perfectly acceptable last year could sit above the guidance value in 2027, with nothing changed in your sourcing.

It's founders, the scientific minds at FoodOxys, are staying fully part of the story.

The natural next step in a partnership that began back in 2023, where Olea Fortius has supplied our high-phenolic olive pulp, and together we built a research program running from lab to farm. That work already produced Novinox® Nat Olea, our natural olive-based antioxidant, and now paves the way for even more innovative new products (stay tuned on that one... 👀).

🤔 100% of piglets carried mycotoxins internally, and not one of them had eaten a single meal. So what gives? Biomonitoring was one of the biggest talking points at our recent Masterclass, its power to reveal what feed analysis cannot. This swine case shows exactly why: real exposure inside the animal, vertical transfer from mother to offspring, and proof that a mitigation strategy works, all in one story.

At a swine farm in Taiwan, newborn piglets were showing reduced vitality and prolapses before they had ever touched solid feed. Feed analysis came back clean, which only deepened the mystery. It was biomonitoring that finally revealed what was happening.

Three Fusarium metabolites (beauvericin, enniatin B1 and zearalenone) turned up in 100% of the sows and 100% of their piglets. Identical profiles, which meant only one thing: the toxins were passing from mother to offspring, across the placenta and through milk, before any feed was ever involved.

So the farm changed one thing. Over three months, a targeted intervention was applied to the sows' diets, and to the sows only. Not a single piglet was treated directly. Three months later, here were the results:
— Zearalenone cleared from the sows entirely
— 66% of sows showed zero mycotoxins
— Piglet exposure dropped proportionally, without dosing a single piglet

The window between birth and first feed is real, and on most farms it stays invisible. Biomonitoring is what makes it visible. Stop assuming. Start biomonitoring.

✅🐔 Our second Poultry Masterclass of the year is done! This session, we spoke about mycotoxins, intestinal health, coccidiosis management programs, genetics and more, in combination with a hands-on necropsy session (because learning doesn't just take place in the boardroom!).

It also marked a lot of firsts, including a panel discussion hosted by Emmy Koeleman, Animal and Feed Science Writer, a brand new location, elevated topics about where the industry is headed by esteemed guest speakers, a QR code that allowed our attendees from around the world to follow the presentations with a live translation in the language of their choice, as well as a tour of the medieval city castle Gravensteen.

🌡️ We've just endured the 11 hottest years on record. And the animals in our care are feeling every degree of it. When heatwaves keep nights warm, animals can't cool off = Heat stress sets in.

It can hit any animal, whatever the species, age, or health. But swine, poultry, and ruminants suffer most. Pigs and poultry can't sweat. Ruminants generate extra heat from digestion.

The reality is stark:
🐔 2.5–3 million broiler chickens died in France's late-June 2026 heatwave
🐔 1.8 million chickens lost to H5N1 at a Colorado farm in summer 2024, where extreme heat helped the virus spread during the cull

And the science tells the same story:
🥛 ~18% average drop in milk yield in dairy cows under heat stress
💨 68.05% rise in respiratory rate in ruminants, with energy pulled from productivity just to stay cool

Death isn't a worst-case footnote anymore. The millions of birds lost in France and Colorado are what this looks like at scale, right now. As summer ends in the North, it begins in the South, and the trend is unmistakable: the heat is intensifying year on year. The time to prepare is now, wherever you farm.
