I think it’s time to get real with food again, and yes, with real food. No more planning for perfect situations that never happen, just planning for the real you, with meals that are doable, delicious, and far from dull. Give me some love if you’re ready to ditch your salt-free heavy meal planning load off your shoulders and go back to LOVING meals 🧡

It takes a village to raise a child, the proverb says. Here in Djerba, where we are staying this summer, this traditional village still exists. While I am very thankful for the care my family in law gives my son - unconditionally and only with honest intentions - I’ll admit that depending on the village isn’t always as romantic as it sometimes appears. Because I learned that it also takes a village to feed a child. Growing up in a culture that promotes individuality and having a clear vision of how to nurture healthy eating habits, I’m finding this to be quite a challenge.

For example, I can’t really leave a message on the fridge with detailed instructions on how to look after my child. And especially not about what our daily menu looks like or how I like to communicate about food. Of course, technically speaking, I could leave a message, but it would not be helpful. Why is that?
1/ First of all, elders still see me as a kiddo too 😅
2/ Even when the wise elders would want to hear me out, they would apply this very strictly. But from my experience as a non-diet dietitian, I know that openly forbidding foods – meaning that all the other kids can have something while my son can’t – would have an opposite effect, and feelings of injustice or anger would develop.
3/ As lont as I feel the need to brief, there’s control and fear. So the question is - how can I unpack what’s going here? Breaking a cycle means seeing a cycle first.

Honestly, I’ve been wondering this summer if I should note give up on Instagram, because it’s such a big mess in terms of messaging and consuming content (I mean, old school magazines also show casted diet culture but at least we had a little bit more agency to select what you’ll read and skip. Every time I’m scrolling here, I’m just always somehow don’t feel empowered, and it’s not just the content. It’s just too many ideas at once, bam bam bam, like I’m slammed with a polished hammer 😅 And you know what? Most of the content I see just hits my emotions, not my cognitions. That’s not a coincidence as many creators are after our feelings, not your cognitions to create a connection with us, go viral and so on. That’s often why I FEEL so weird after scrolling. I did not receive too much information, I just felt too much things from too much people in 5 minutes. This is my personal experience, not a deep dive (although the communication specialist in me probably will deep dive that once).

Anyway, I decided to stay for now. It’s like a paradox because I want to consume less content, but I’ve always been working in the press and not messaging on Instagram would feels like giving free reign to wellness culture. So I’m still here with other badass content creators and I’m looking forward to connecting with the beautiful humans out here. Feel free to DM me if you feel like connecting because after all, it’s a social medium, not a solo medium💜

I see a lot of parents say that they don’t want to say ‘just eat 1 cookie’ because it challenges a good relationship with food. That’s true! But you know what, getting better at hiding restrictions and doing it the sneaky way is not the solution 😅

Why? Food is relational, it always was and always will be. And the flip side is that we bring a lot of our own history on the table, maybe more than we’re admitting. And when we restrict our kids from food, also in a very sneaky way, that can backfire on us. Why? Because our kids feel us. And the last thing that we want them to feel, is how uncomfortable we sometimes feel around food. Those feelings are human, but also cultural and in many cases diet cultural - leading us to openly or covertly control our kids diets. And when we are controlling, we are fearing. And that fear needs to be addressed, one way or another, in order to collectively find our chill back our food so that we (and our kids) can eat to live, pursuit our dreams and just do what humans do 🧡

I’m saying this because I was that mother. I was unaware of how my f***ed up relationship with food not only brought my into studying functional nutrition, but also get so un-chill around food and risk handing over my sh*tty relationship with food to my child. Are you also done with that? 💜

Now that I grabbed your attention, please let this sink in. A lot of information on Instagram is not about information. It’s about conversion. And that starts by making you very insecure about how/what/why you’re eating 😇

Food is always cultural! Please don’t make it diet cultural. After all, there’s no right or wrong way if eating. And if the universe treats us to pasta and pizza on the way home - only this can happen so spontaneously in Djerba - embrace food as always with an open heart and mind. My boys had a yummy late night snack and for me our late night surprise became part or a lunch to look forward to during busy consultations the next day 🧡

I feel that debunking comes with a cost. Fair enough, in my work, I spent a lot if time exploring cognitions with my patients, who wonder what normal eating looks like or face disordered eating.

But prevention is not the same as therapy. If we take what happens in sessions on Instagram, aren’t we feeding the fears, algorithm, and mental proces of something that could be an embodied experience - eating - too much here? I mean, every time something is debunked (or not), it looks like this this sciency side of food part of the human experience around food. It’s not. It’s what I love as a nutritionist, but not what every human on the planet needs to know about food. On the contrary, it might be too much. Not because you can’t handle that, but because it makes eating a cognitieve process more than an embodied experience. All input welcome 💜
