In conclusion, even at low levels, alcohol consumption was associated with higher blood pressure, and abstinence was associated with lower blood pressure in both sexes. These findings suggest that abstaining from alcohol is a widely applicable strategy, even among light to moderate drinkers, for blood pressure control. In this large dataset, changes in blood pressure in women associated with consumption as low as 0.5 to 1 drink per day can be detected.
