Interested in the OECI NextGen Excellence Mobility Programme, but not sure where to start?

You don’t need to have everything planned from the beginning.

Start with one question: what would you like to learn from another cancer centre?

Maybe you would like to explore a clinical practice, learn about a research area, or see how another centre approaches quality management or organisational development — and bring new perspectives back to your own work.

With that in mind, you can look for a potential host among OECI Member Institutes and discuss your idea with your home and potential host institution.

From there, you can develop your idea into a mobility proposal.

The OECI NextGen Excellence Mobility Programme supports early-career professionals under 40 in turning this kind of idea into a short-term exchange within the OECI network.

Applications close on 25 September 2026.

🔵 CCI4EU Deep Dive Series: Portugal

🇵🇹 How can existing collaboration become the foundation for a Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructure?

The CCI4EU Deep Dive in Northern Portugal supported the establishment of the country’s first Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructure (CCINP), bringing together healthcare providers, research institutions and patient advocacy organisations across a region of around 3.7 million people.

The Deep Dive focused on three areas: strengthening the structure of the CCI, improving collaboration between institutions, and developing more coordinated patient pathways.

Some of the key developments included:

• a formal agreement establishing the CCINP partnership
• three Interface Working Groups covering patient pathways, education & training, and cancer research & innovation
• a harmonised Precision Cancer Medicine patient pathway
• the creation of a Patient Council at IPO Porto
• the launch of the multicentric Screen4CANCER research project

The CCINP also recorded a 25-point increase in overall maturity, from 26% to 51%.

The Portugal Deep Dive shows how existing partnerships can become the foundation for a more structured approach to cancer care — creating new opportunities for integration, research, patient involvement and collaboration across the region.

🔖 BEYOND THE CERTIFICATE | 01/06

What does it mean to be an OECI Auditor?

For Clara Caruana, being an auditor is about much more than assessing a cancer centre against a set of standards.

As Project Manager at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Clínica Universidad de Navarra, Clara sees each audit as an opportunity to learn from other centres and professionals.

Every audit offers new perspectives that can be taken back to her own cancer centre. It is an exchange in both directions: centres share their experience, auditors learn from their peers, and new ideas and approaches can travel across the OECI network.

This is what we will explore in our new Beyond the Certificate series, where OECI Auditors share what their role means to them, what they learn through peer review, and what they bring back to their own organisations.

Working in the same environment every day helps us build depth and expertise. But seeing how colleagues in another cancer centre approach a familiar challenge can sometimes change the way we look at our own work.

The OECI NextGen Excellence Mobility Programme gives early-career professionals the opportunity to spend time at another OECI Member Institute, exchange knowledge and experience with colleagues, and discover different approaches to cancer care, research and professional practice.

The value of mobility is not simply in going somewhere new. It is in what you bring back: new ideas, different ways of working, and insights that can be shared with colleagues at your home institution.

This exchange can also open the door to new connections and collaboration across the OECI network.

🔵 CCI4EU Deep Dive Series: Italy

How can one of Europe’s most established cancer networks continue to grow?

The CCI4EU Deep Dive in Piemonte & Valle d’Aosta shows that improving cancer care is not only about creating new structures – it’s also about strengthening the ones that already exist.

Working together with healthcare professionals, researchers, regional authorities and patient representatives, multidisciplinary expert teams explored how stronger collaboration, shared governance and better integration can further enhance an already mature Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructure.

Among the key developments were:
• stronger regional governance and coordination
• the establishment of a Clinical Research Steering Committee
• greater support for clinical research across the network
• more standardised patient pathways
• progress towards improved data interoperability and digital integration

The experience from Italy reminds us that excellence is not a destination, but a continuous process of learning, collaboration and improvement – always with the goal of delivering better care for patients.

What does meaningful support really look like?

For people affected by cancer, support goes far beyond treatment. It means being listened to, having their experiences valued, and ensuring that quality of life remains at the heart of care.

This was one of the key messages from OECI Oncology Days 2026, where experts, patient representatives and healthcare professionals explored how patient partnership can help shape more responsive and person-centred cancer care.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of initiatives such as EUonQoL, which is developing innovative tools to better understand patients’ quality of life and generate evidence to support more equitable cancer care across Europe.

“Patients are not just recipients of cancer care. They are partners in shaping it.”

This World Cancer Support Month, OECI recognises everyone working to ensure that patients’ voices help shape clinical care, research, education and the future of cancer services.

Because meaningful support begins with listening – and grows stronger through collaboration.
