🫀 Celebrating Perfusion Week! 🫀

This week, we recognize the vital work of perfusionists—the professionals who quite literally keep life flowing.

Behind every successful open-heart surgery and many critical care procedures, there’s a perfusionist managing the heart-lung machine, ensuring oxygen continues to circulate when the heart takes a pause. It’s a role that demands precision, deep expertise, and unwavering focus.

Perfusionists may work behind the scenes, but their impact is front and center in patient outcomes every single day.

👏 To all perfusionists: thank you for your dedication, skill, and the calm you bring to high-stakes moments. Your work saves lives.

We’re proud to share a new collaborative publication from the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion:

“Adding the Missing Link – Integration of Anesthesia and Perfusion Variables into Europe’s Largest Congenital Cardiac Surgery Outcomes Database”

This important work brings together the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECHSA), the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC), and EBCP.

By integrating anesthesia and perfusion data into Europe’s largest congenital cardiac surgery database, we are moving closer to a more complete understanding of what happens in the operating room and how it impacts patient outcomes.

🔬 A stronger dataset
🤝 A powerful collaboration
❤️ Better care for patients

This is a meaningful step forward in advancing research, quality improvement, and clinical practice across Europe.

More projects are already on the way - watch this space!

Numerous databases exist in the field of cardiac surgery across Europe, but none of them combine the entire captured data of all clinical specialties involved in the care process of patients, including anesthesia and perfusion. To fill this gap the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECH...

🇪🇺🤝 EBCP stands with Ukrainian perfusionists 🇺🇦

Hospitals in Ukraine, including the Heart Institute of Kyiv, are facing critical power outages due to ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure. For patients on ECMO and heart-lung machines, unstable electricity is a direct threat to life.Despite generators, sudden blackouts and voltage drops continue to endanger life-saving procedures.

👉 Urgent need: portable power stations (2–5 kW) to support critical extracorporeal equipment during outages.

We call on our perfusionist community, partners, and industry colleagues:
If you can help — with equipment, resources, or by sharing this message — please do.

Solidarity saves lives.
EBCP is with Ukraine.

As the year comes to an end, the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion would like to extend warm wishes to all perfusionists and our valued partners for a joyful Christmas and a successful, healthy New Year.

This year has been marked by strong scientific progress and collaboration, with numerous high-quality publications reflecting the commitment, expertise, and innovation within our community. We were also proud to witness a highly successful Europerfusion Congress in Athens, which once again demonstrated the strength and unity of European perfusion practice.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue building on these achievements through further collaborations, education, and research, and we already look forward to welcoming you to Europerfusion in Belgrade in 2026.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support . We wish you and your families a peaceful holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
