Early diagnosis saves lives.

📈For common cancers, early-stage diagnosis can raise survival by up to 13 times.
📉By contrast, late-stage detection can reduce survival rates to below 10% after five years.

The issue: we know how to detect cancer earlier through screening, yet implementation varies dramatically between and within countries.

Following the success of the 2024 edition, the new Screening Policy Index introduces
➡️ a single measurement benchmarking a country’s progress in cancer screening, and
➡️ actionable policy insights to assist decision-makers

⚠️ To***co consumption accounts for 700,000 deaths in the EU every year.

Yet, nearly 20 % of people aged 15 years and over in the EU are daily smokers. Even worse, novel ni****ne and to***co products are reaching more and more young people. 🚭

Europe is aiming to create a to***co-free generation by 2040. The ambition is set. Now the policy needs to deliver:

➡️ By revising the To***co Taxation Directive – and including novel to***co and ni****ne products – the European Union can help make these products less affordable and less attractive.

➡️ By adopting the To***co Excise Duty Own Resource proposed under the EU's next long-term budget, the EU could generate an estimated €11.2 billion annually for health and cancer prevention

➡️ By strengthening the existing rules in the upcoming To***co Products Directive and To***co Advertising Directive, which the European Commission is currently consulting on, the EU can promote healthier lifestyles and prevent people from picking up the habit in the first place.

This World No To***co Day, the Parliamentary Intergroup on Cancer and Rare Diseases sends a clear message: Europe must stay ambitious on to***co prevention, regulation and taxation.

⚠️ Smoking causes 27% of all cancer cases in Europe. Each year, this leads to 700K deaths which could have been prevented.

As we mark ***coDay, we reflect on the need to advance these goals and secure their legacy in the next phase of European cancer cooperation.

Last July, the European Commission put forward a proposal for the Revised To***co Taxation Directive, pushing for increased taxation on to***co products, including the extension of excise duties to novel to***co and ni****ne products.

This March, the European Parliament voted to support the proposal. Now, it is time for the Council of the EU to prepare its position. Negotiations are set to be concluded as early as the end of this year.

The European Cancer Organisation and its member societies across the continent are urging governments to seize this once-in-a-generation opportunity to save hundreds of thousands of lives. 🚭

Digital health has the potential to transform cancer care across Europe, but only if it remains accessible, trustworthy and patient-centred. 💻

This , we highlight the importance of stronger European collaboration on cancer information, health data and digital tools.

Through projects such as EU-CIP and CANDLE, we are working to:
🌍 Improve access to reliable cancer information
🔗 Strengthen collaboration between cancer data initiatives
👥 Support more patient-centred digital health systems across Europe

Better digital infrastructure means better research, better policymaking and, ultimately, better outcomes for patients.

What once seemed like a bold ambition is now becoming reality.

When was first conceived, the goal was to certify 400 professionals across Europe.

Now, only halfway through its implementation, that target has already been reached.

With many participants still due to complete the programme in the coming months, INTERACT-EUROPE 100 is on track to surpass expectations.

Europe’s future competitiveness depends on stronger, more coordinated research – and that includes cancer research. 🔬

As part of the consultation on the future European Research Area (ERA) Act, ECO is calling for:
• 🏥 Better coordination of cancer research investments across Europe
• ⚖️ Reduced inequalities in research capacity and access to clinical trials between Member States
• 🏛️ Long-term governance structures to ensure continuity and accountability in EU cancer research
• 🤖 Stronger European leadership on AI, data sharing and digital innovation in cancer care
• 👩‍🔬 Improved mobility, recognition and support for researchers across borders

Cancer research is not only a health priority, but a strategic investment in Europe’s innovation capacity, resilience and future competitiveness.

This , we ask for a more connected, equitable and future-focused European research ecosystem. 👈

The past few weeks, the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition has been inviting people and communities worldwide to take part in Bladder Cancer Awareness Month.

This global initiative highlights a form of cancer that affects more than 610,000 people each year. The campaign encourages people not to delay seeking medical advice when they notice potential symptoms, especially blood in the urine.

📢 Women’s health is a right, not a privilege of where she lives.

More than 1.2 million women in the EU are diagnosed with cancer each year, and nearly 600,000 die from it.

On the International Day of Action for Women’s Health, ECO calls attention to its new Women & Cancer Policy Index, revealing gaps in how countries address gender-specific cancer policies and push for meaningful policy action.

Women’s cancer needs are broader than treatment alone, and policies must reflect the reality of prevention, screening, fertility needs, as well as quality-of-life and caregiving.

📢 Surviving cancer should not mean facing discrimination years after the treatment!

Across Europe, too many cancer survivors continue to face stigma, mental health struggles, and barriers when trying to return to work, access insurance, or secure a mortgage.

This , we highlight the importance of placing the daily experiences of patients and survivors at the centre of cancer policy and care.

Through its Survivorship and Quality of Life and Inequalities Network, ECO works alongside patient advocates, healthcare professionals, researchers and members of the general public to help tackle inequalities and improve quality of life across the cancer journey.

A key part of this work is advancing the Right to Be Forgotten, an initiative calling for fairer access to financial services for cancer survivors across Europe, without discrimination linked to a past diagnosis. This means that cancer survivors would not be required to disclose their previous diagnosis when applying for products like loans, mortgages, or insurance, years after successful treatment has ended.

Because life after cancer should be lived with dignity, not defined by a past diagnosis.
