For people living in border regions, a journey can involve two countries – but also:
😵‍💫 two ticketing systems,
😵‍💫 timetables that don’t connect or
😵‍💫 public transport planned separately on either side.

Europeans have a practical vision for what could change.

🚃 Consultations on the future of Interreg point towards transport services planned more closely across borders, greener mobility solutions and targeted improvements where connections are still missing.

It’s a shift from looking at transport on either side of the border separately to looking at the journey as a whole.

🇪🇺 These priorities are helping inform discussions about Interreg after 2027.

🎤 Meet the speakers of the 31st Beyond Borders: Breakfast Debate

How will the new Skills Portability Initiative make it easier to live in one country and work in another? We are pleased to welcome two speakers from the European Commission to explore what it means for :

🔹 Koen Nomden (DG EMPL), Team Leader for Transparency and Portability of Skills and Qualifications, will present the initiative and what it changes for workers, employers and public authorities.
🔹 Clara Menasseyre (DG REGIO) will deliver the closing remarks and reflect on what the discussion means for people living and working across borders.

🎉 b-solutions has reached 200 cases, a major milestone for cross-border cooperation in Europe.

Since 2018, the initiative has helped public authorities tackle legal and administrative obstacles across EU internal borders, from mobility and public services to environmental management and institutional cooperation.

The 200th case comes from the Ohrid–Prespa transboundary region, shared by Albania, Greece and North Macedonia, where partners are working to jointly manage the lake system and protect biodiversity across different legal frameworks.

b-solutions is managed by AEBR on behalf of DG REGIO.

This edition covers the adoption of the Fair Mobility Package, new BRIDGEforEU cross-border coordination points in France and Luxembourg, and b-solutions reaching its 200th case.

We also welcome the new 2026–2027 Cross-Border Ambassadors: ten young people selected from 135 applications across 24 countries.

Ever had a qualification from one side of a border not quite translate on the other? In border regions, recognising qualifications is one of the most common practical challenges for cross-border workers and employers.

The 31st Beyond Borders Breakfast Debate will focus on the Skills Portability Initiative, adopted by the European Commission as part of the Fair Labour Mobility Package, and on how easier recognition and digital portability of skills can help workers find jobs faster and employers address labour shortages.

🏘️ How do housing prices and affordability change across Europe's ?

On 13 October, join the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Border Focal Point Network in Brussels for "Housing markets in EU cross-border regions: Turning borders into opportunities."

Expert speakers will present new JRC evidence on how rental and sale prices, and affordability, vary across EU municipalities. They'll also discuss how this evidence can support tailored policies, joint planning and territorial cooperation in border regions.

The session is a satellite event of 2026.
