Acquired Brain Injury remains a major cause of long-term disability worldwide.
This European PRM position paper defines the role of the PRM physician across all rehabilitation phases—from ICU to community reintegration.

🇪🇺 The UEMS-PRM Section held its Spring General Assembly in Malta on 27-28 February 2026, chaired by President Prof. Mauro Zampolini.
Two days of intensive work that marked an important step forward for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Europe.

Key topics at the heart of the discussions ⬇️

💡 The introduction of Value-Based Healthcare in rehabilitation. A paradigm shift: moving beyond payment for individual procedures to evaluating the entire care pathway in relation to patient outcomes. A turning point that redefines how rehabilitation is conceived and funded.

🤖 Artificial Intelligence as a strategic tool. Version 2.0 of the Section's position paper is in preparation, aligned with the EU AI Act. The message is clear: AI is already here, and it must be used to augment the capabilities of professionals, not to replace them.

⏱️ A powerful message on rehabilitation dosage. The time dedicated to individual exercise is directly linked to recovery. The evidence speaks for itself: greater rehabilitation intensity means better patient outcomes. A principle that health systems can no longer afford to overlook.

❤️ The right to rehabilitation in emergencies and war zones was strongly reaffirmed. A right that is currently being denied, both directly and indirectly, and one that the European medical community is determined to defend.

✓ The revision of the European White Book of PRM continues to advance, alongside new editorial agreements with leading scientific journals and preparations for a strong presence at ESPRM 2026 in Krakow and the 1st UEMS Congress in Leuven.
