🟡 Gold September: The Projects Behind the Progress (5/12)
As the number of childhood cancer survivors grows, understanding and addressing the long-term effects of cancer and its treatment becomes increasingly important.

SCARLET is strengthening research capacity in Lithuania around childhood cancer survivorship, with a particular focus on early and late effects, transition from paediatric to adult care and innovative approaches to monitoring survivors.

Through knowledge exchange, education, research and collaboration between institutions across Europe, the project aims to help improve not only survival – but the quality of survival.
Because every child cured of cancer deserves the opportunity to live well beyond it. 💛

📍 MIREYA is officially underway!
SIOPE is in Milan for the MIREYA project kick-off meeting, marking the start of an ambitious 5-year journey to better understand how multiple environmental exposures may contribute to the development and outcomes of rare cancers in children, adolescents and young adults.

By bringing together epidemiological data, multi-omics and AI-driven analyses, MIREYA aims to generate new insights into the impact and causal pathways of environmental exposures and their role in childhood and AYA cancers.

🎯 SIOPE will lead WP2 on Communication & Dissemination, Stakeholder Engagement and Exploitation, helping connect the project’s research with the scientific, patient advocacy, policy and public communities.
We are excited to be part of this collaboration and look forward to sharing the journey with you on our social media! 🚀

What if a simple blood sample could help detect neuroblastoma relapse earlier?
That is the ambition behind MONALISA.

This five-year European research project is investigating the use of liquid biopsies to monitor children with high-risk neuroblastoma. By detecting tumour markers in blood, researchers hope to identify relapse earlier and support more personalised treatment decisions.

Research today can change how we detect and treat cancer tomorrow. 💛

🟡 Gold September: The Projects Behind the Progress (3/12)
Cancer care depends on professionals from many different specialties working together. INTERACT-EUROPE 100 is bringing inter-specialty cancer training to 100 cancer centres across Europe, helping healthcare professionals strengthen multidisciplinary and multi-professional collaboration.

SIOPE is contributing the paediatric oncology perspective by supporting the review and adaptation of the inter-specialty cancer training programme for paediatric oncology.
Because children and young people with cancer deserve care built around teams that learn, communicate and work together. 💛

📚 Literacy is more than reading and writing - it is about having the knowledge and skills to understand, learn and act.

On International Literacy Day, we are highlighting how education and knowledge-sharing can help strengthen childhood cancer survivorship care.
Through the SCARLET project, healthcare and research professionals across Europe learn from one another through training, twinning activities and knowledge transfer.

By strengthening knowledge and research capacity in Lithuania, SCARLET is helping build stronger networks and support evidence-based care.
Because when knowledge is shared, capacity grows - and better-informed professionals can make a difference. 💙

❔ Have you ever wondered why the is representative for and why is the official ?

✔️ September is a month marking new beginnings for most children, as they return to school. However, this is not the reality for childhood cancer patients. During this month, we unite to raise awareness for all children and adolescents with cancer, using the symbol of the gold ribbon.

Why gold? Because gold represents something precious, just like children for our society. The gold ribbon is the universal symbol for all types of childhood cancers, and it stands a reminder that children are our most valuable treasures. 💛

Youth Cancer Network

Cancer can really change the way people show up in your life.

Some friendships get stronger.
Some people quietly vanish.
Some unexpected connections become everything.

As part of YARN, we’re inviting young people affected by cancer across Europe to take part in a new survey on social connections, emotional wellbeing, and support during and after treatment.

We want to hear about:
• friendships
• family
• online communities
• healthcare professionals
• the people who got it
• the people who absolutely did not

Your experience will help shape future support programmes and resources for young people affected by cancer.

Can advances in imaging help make cancer treatment more precise and less invasive?

IMAGIO is developing the next generation of interventional imaging, combining innovative imaging technologies with advances in cancer treatment to support more personalised, minimally invasive and efficient care.

Within the project, SIOPE is exploring how advances made through IMAGIO could accelerate treatments and improve clinical outcomes for paediatric patients in the future, connecting the work with expertise from the European paediatric oncology community.
Innovation in adult oncology can also open new possibilities for children and young people with cancer. 💛

🟡 Gold September: The Projects Behind the Progress
This Gold September, we’re putting the spotlight on the projects turning collaboration, research and innovation into progress for children and young people with cancer.
12 projects. One shared goal: improving childhood cancer outcomes.

(1/12) - What if expertise could travel, even when patients cannot?
The European Reference Network for Paediatric Cancer, ERN PaedCan, connects specialised healthcare providers across Europe to help children and adolescents with cancer access the expertise they need – wherever they live.
Through cross-border collaboration, virtual expert consultations, training, registries and European clinical practice guidelines, the network is working to reduce inequalities and improve access to high-quality paediatric oncology care across Europe.
Because where a child lives should not determine the quality of cancer care they receive. 💛

For Gold September, SIOPE was privileged to contribute today to the European Parliament’s SANT Committee hearing on Childhood Cancer

In his intervention, SIOPE’s and Gustave Roussy’s representative, Gilles Vassal highlighted the opportunity offered by the Biotech Act to accelerate the development of medicines for children with rare, life-threatening diseases through dedicated provisions and stressed the crucial importance of continued EU investment through the next MFF.

We were deeply encouraged by the overwhelming support from MEPs. The European Parliament has been instrumental in driving important policy advances for children and young people with cancer — and we need this leadership to continue.

A special thank you to our valued partner CCI Europe for your leadership and, above all, for ensuring that the voices of childhood cancer patient, parents and survivors remain at the centre of the conversation. ❤️
