🔴 WORLD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY: MENSTRUATION IS NATURAL, BUT ABNORMALITIES SHOULD NEVER BE IGNORED
Every year on May 28, the world observes World Menstrual Hygiene Day. This day aims to break the taboos surrounding menstruation and raise awareness among girls, women, and the entire community about the importance of menstrual health.
Menstruation is a normal part of the female body's functioning. However, certain abnormalities may be signs of health problems that require medical attention.
⚠️ When should you consult a healthcare professional?
👉 If your menstrual flow is very heavy, requiring you to change your sanitary protection every hour;
👉 If menstrual pain is so severe that it prevents you from attending school, going to work, or carrying out daily activities;
👉 If your periods become irregular after previously being regular;
👉 If your menstrual bleeding lasts longer than 7 days;
👉 If your periods stop for several months without pregnancy;
👉 If you experience bleeding between periods;
👉 If your first period has not started by the age of 15.
Many young girls suffer in silence due to fear, embarrassment, or lack of information. Yet seeking medical advice early can help detect and treat conditions such as hormonal disorders, infections, anemia, ovarian cysts, and other gynecological diseases.
💬 To parents, teachers, and community leaders: let us encourage open conversations about menstruation so that girls feel comfortable seeking help whenever they need it.
🌸 Menstruation is not a disease. However, any abnormality in the menstrual cycle deserves special attention.
📢 Together, let us break the taboos and protect the health of girls and women in Burundi.
