Paulina, a Tsimane mother in the bolivian Amazon, was alone, gravely ill, and could not afford the care that could possibly save her life.
Paulina has been losing her battle against pulmonary tuberculosis and malnutrition. As her condition worsened, she had to leave her community to seek medical attention in the town of Rurrenabaque — almost always without her husband as he travels back and forth from the Community (7 hours by boat) to tend to their Chaco (food farm) so that he can bring rice, beans and the other basic foods they grow to keep them from going hungry.
She arrived in Rurrenabaque with her young son. No roof over her head. No money. Barely speaking the Spanish required to navigate the medical system.
That was when our advocate Lucas stepped in. Our team member had known the couple for several years and is there so that she need not face this alone. Lucas is her advocate, her friend, and her unconditional support. Her 4-year-old son has also had to undergo treatment as a precaution given how contagious this disease is and we are supporting both of them throughout these 6 months of medical care. We set up a tent, mattress, sheets, a stove and gas for cooking, etc., to shelter them during the rainy season and make sure they have food every day. Lucas also continues to visit her daily through her recovery.
Her mother died from the same illness. We are doing all we can to keep that from happening again.
And today? She is slowly regaining her strength. 💚but she is not out of the woods yet.
This is what we are here for. We dream of a day when our economic empowerment programs allow these communities to sustain themselves in crises like this. We work to fund a women’s center that has clean and dry rooms and bathrooms for long term recovery needs such as Paulina’s. But change is slow, and lives cannot wait.
She entrusted us with her story — and allows us to share it — with the hope that it moves you to make sure the next person in crisis doesn’t have to face it alone either.
Let her courage be worth it. Donate through the link below and help us continue to be present when it matters most.
