Neste Mês da História da Mulher, tenho pensado muito sobre o que as mulheres merecem... e, embora não pretenda saber tudo, 😂
Mas, acredito que as mulheres — especialmente as mulheres negras e indígenas — merecem descansar. E, mais do que descansar, merecem receber cuidados, porque já regamos um mundo que nos rega por último, se é que decide nos regar. Mulheres negras descansando é a minha imagem favorita de se ver.
Então, gente, tenho uma pergunta muito importante para vocês

It’s been 9 years since my maternal grandma transitioned. I gathered my family briefly to remember her on Monday, the anniversary of her passing. I can’t believe it’s been almost 10 years but I truly feel closer to her now than when she was living. She finally taught me how to make collards from the grave, we talk every week (sometimes more often) and I am constantly asking her for guidance. I know what she likes and when she disapproves. The life I’m living now is bigger than she could have ever imagined. A sharecroppers daughter in rural Mississippi gave birth to a daughter who gave birth to another daughter who traveled the world and lives in Brasil.

I saw the 3rd picture the other day - and did a double take, because I thought that was me. It’s actually my mom, at 45, can you believe it? It’s funny how the older we get the more we see the faces of our ancestors and loved ones reflected back in the mirror.

I am proud to the the second granddaughter of Dorthy Nell Parkman Pickens. A woman who lived her best, loved fiercely, an incredibly talented seamstress and was by FAR the best cook in the family. A gardening woman. A god-fearing woman.

My mom inherited her pots and pans, but never really used them. I inherited her sewing machines and didn’t use them. Anyway the other day my mom unearthed the pots and since has been cooking the best meals of her life with those pots and pans. I’ve been repairing a lot of my clothes lately sewing by hand, thinking of her. We honor her by carrying on her skills. A true legacy. I love you Avó! Thank you thank thank you for walking with me, for protecting me and blessing me.
