World Hypertension Day is observed annually on 17th May to raise awareness on the prevention, early detection, and control of hypertension.
On 17 May 2026, the day was observed at the Old Dzong, Pemagatshel, organized by Pemagatshel Hospital in the presence of monks and health officials including the District Public Health Officer (DPHO), Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Assistant Administrative Officer (ADMO), NCD focal person and Mr. Yeshi Wangdi(HA).
The programme was observed under the global theme “Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer” highlighting the importance of accurate blood pressure measurement and healthy lifestyle practices.
In his remarks, the Chief Medical Officer emphasized hypertension as a major public health concern and a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, stroke, kidney disease, and other non-communicable diseases. He noted that hypertension is often silent and stressed the importance of regular screening. He further highlighted preventive measures including reducing excessive intake of salt and oil, consuming a balanced diet, avoiding to***co and alcohol use, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and managing stress.
The District Public Health Officer (DPHO) also reiterated that hypertension is an increasing concern both globally and in Bhutan. He emphasized prevention through early screening, timely diagnosis, adherence to treatment, and sustained lifestyle modification to reduce complications and improve overall health outcomes.
As part of the programme, blood pressure screening was conducted for monks to support early detection and appropriate follow-up.
The observance aimed to strengthen awareness on hypertension and promote preventive health practices through community engagement and efforts to address non-communicable diseases.
