BACKGROUND of VDCP.

Malaria control Programme in Bhutan was started as the National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEF) in 1964. In 1965 there were 518 malaria cases reported. The malaria eradication strategies consisted of active cases of surveillance and vector control through Indoor residual spraying with DDT. Over the years the cases continued to rise to the peak in 1994, with 39,825 reported malaria cases which were the highest ever that the country experienced. From 1995 to 1997, the malaria control strategy was revised and Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) with synthetic pyrethroids in all the malaria endemic districts at six monthly intervals was started which resulted in the decline of the malaria cases.

Malaria cases have reduced significantly from an incidence rate of 927 in 2000 to 6.1 cases per 100000 in 2016. Such an achievement has been made due to targeted interventions where malaria cases were commonly reported. Consequently, the mortality due to malaria cases has also declined to negligible in 2016 from 2.3 per 100,000 in 2000.
