Minister of Health Dr Stephen Modise says findings from the Global Youth To***co Survey conducted last year indicate that 10% percent of young people in Botswana are using to***co products, a situation that calls for a coordinated response to prevent addiction. The survey targets school going children aged 13 to 15 years old.
Speaking yesterday during the commemoration of World No To***co Day, he said to***co use is a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which account for 47 percent of all deaths in Botswana.
He noted that the to***co industry continues to evolve its marketing strategies, using attractive flavours and packaging to target young people and encourage to***co use.
Dr Modise further said government is finalising regulations to operationalise the To***co Control Act of 2021, to pave the way for effective enforcement and implementation of to***co control measures.
