Public Notice - Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA) has authorised Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine (CoronaVac) for emergency use.

1. What CoronaVac is and what it is used for?
CoronaVac Vaccine is used for active immunisation to prevent severe COVID-19 disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. The vaccine stimulates your body to produce antibodies that protect against COVID-19 disease.
2. What does CoronaVac Vaccine contain?
The active ingredient is Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Virus (CZ02 strain).
It also contains other ingredients listed below;
• Aluminium hydroxide
• Disodium hydrogen phosphate
• Monosodium dihydrogen phosphate
• Sodium chloride
• Sodium hydroxide
3. Vaccination schedule
CoronaVac has been authorised for emergency use in people aged 18 years and above. The vaccine is injected on your upper arm
You will receive a first single and second dose of 0.5ml 2 to 4 weeks apart. Vaccinators will inform you about the date for the second dose at the vaccination site. Please ensure you receive CoronaVac for your second dose. It is important to receive both the doses.
4. What you need to know before you receive CoronaVac Vaccine
Do not receive CoronaVac vaccine;
•If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to the active ingredient or any of the other ingredients listed in section 2. Signs of an allergic reaction may include itchy skin rash, shortness of breath and swelling of the face or tongue
•If you have severe neurological conditions (eg, transverse myelitis, Guillain Barré syndrome, demyelinating diseases, etc.)
• If you have uncontrolled severe chronic diseases
• If you are pregnant / lactating
5. Precautions
Tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before vaccination:
• If you have acute diseases, acute exacerbation of chronic diseases, severe chronic diseases, atopy, and fever
• If you are diabetic, or history of convulsions, epilepsy, encephalopathy or mental illness, or family history of those
• If you have thrombocytopenia or haemorrhagic diseases, intramuscular injection of this product may cause bleeding
6. Possible side effects
CoronaVac vaccine has side effects like any other vaccine. Most side effects are mild or moderate and go away within a few days of appearing. All side effects must be reported to any health care professional who will forward them to BoMRA.
Side effects that are observed with CoronaVac Vaccine are as follows: The list is not exhaustive
Very common side effects: may affect ≧10% people
• injection site: pain
• headache
• fatigue
Common side effects: may affect 1%-10% people
• injection site: swelling, pruritus, erythema, induration
• myalgia
• nausea
• diarrhoea
• arthralgia
• cough
• chills
• pruritus
• loss of appetite
• rhinorrhoea
• sore throat
• nasal congestion
• abdominal pain
Rare side effects: may affect 0.1%-1% people
• burn at injection site
• vomit
• hypersensitivity
• abnormal skin and mucosa
• fever
• tremor
• flushing
• oedema
• dizziness
• drowsiness
Very Rare side effects: may affect 0.01%-0.1% people
• muscle spasms
• eyelid oedema
• nosebleeds
• abdominal distension
• constipation
• hyposmia
• ocular congestion
• hot flashes
• hiccups
• conjunctival congestion
Please notify Healthcare professionals if you notice any of the side effects listed above or any other discomfort you may experience.
Other information;
No data are currently available on the use of CoronaVac Vaccine in children and adolescents younger than 18 years of age.
Tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse if;
• you are taking any other medicines or vaccines
• you are pregnant or breastfeeding
CoronaVac vaccine has no known effect on the ability to drive and use machines.
