🌍 ONE HEALTH: WHY IT MATTERS IN INSTITUTES OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Following my recent One Health Awareness Training and previous One HealthPedagogy, one message continues to stand out: the health challenges of today can no longer be addressed by one profession working in isolation.
One Health recognises that human health, animal health and environmental health are interconnected. This makes the approach increasingly important as countries face emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic outbreaks, antimicrobial resistance, food safety concerns, climate change and environmental threats.
For Institutes of Health Sciences and Ministry of Higher Education, Botswana One Health presents an important opportunity to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals differently.
Our students should not only learn how to manage illness at the bedside. They should also understand where diseases come from, how environmental and animal factors influence human health, and how different sectors can work together to prevent health threats before they become crises.
Integrating One Health into health sciences education can strengthen:
🩺 Disease prevention and early detection
🦠 Preparedness for emerging and zoonotic diseases
💊 Antimicrobial resistance awareness and stewardship
🌱 Understanding of climate and environmental impacts on health
🍽️ Food safety and public health surveillance
📊 Epidemiology, research and data-driven decision-making
🤝 Interprofessional and multidisciplinary collaboration
🚨 Outbreak preparedness and emergency response
🏘️ Community health promotion and resilience
Imagine nursing, public health, environmental health, laboratory sciences, pharmacy and other health programmes learning through shared One Health case studies, simulation exercises, outbreak investigations, community projects and research.
This would enable students to appreciate that a patient presenting with illness may be part of a much bigger picture involving animals, food systems, water, climate, occupation, community practices and the environment.
As One Health continues to emerge as an important discipline, Institutes of Health Sciences have an opportunity to become centres of innovation, collaboration and leadership in its implementation.
The future healthcare professional must be prepared not only to treat disease — but to understand and respond to the interconnected systems that determine health.
