𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 | 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟒𝟎

The Botswana Public Health Institute continues to monitor key public health conditions across the country.

𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚: Seven cases were recorded this week - five (5) in Okavango, one (1) in North West and one (1) in Mahalapye. No deaths were reported. The country remains ON ACTION.

𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐃𝐖𝐃): A total of 207 cases and four deaths were reported. This represents a 27% decrease in cases compared with the previous week. The country remains UNDER CONTROL.

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐚-𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐈𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 (𝐈𝐋𝐈): A total of 5,508 cases were reported nationally, a 28% decrease from the previous week. ILI remains the most frequently reported syndrome nationally. The country remains UNDER CONTROL.

𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭: Kenya has confirmed its first imported case and fatality linked to the Bundibugyo Ebola virus strain.

The Botswana Public Health Institute urges the public to continue practicing preventive measures, including seeking early medical care, using mosquito protection, practicing good hygiene, and staying informed through official health channels.

During Week 37, from 06–12 September 2026, BPHI continued to monitor key priority diseases across the country to support timely public health action.

Malaria remained under control with no cases reported, while influenza-like illness and diarrhoea with dehydration remained on alert, requiring continued vigilance and early reporting.

Pneumonia also recorded low numbers and remains under control.

These weekly findings guide our preparedness efforts and reinforce the importance of strong disease surveillance in protecting the health of all communities.

That belief drew close to 300 emergency response specialists from across Southern Africa to Lusaka, Zambia, for the Africa CDC SARCC Southern Africa Regional Functional Simulation Exercise (SIMEX) - a rigorous, practical drill testing our region's ability to respond to an Ebola/Viral Haemorrhagic Fever outbreak.

The Botswana Public Health Institute (BPHI), through its Public Health Emergency Management Pillar, joined other Southern African national PHEOC teams, technical experts, and key global partners - including WHO, UNICEF, US CDC, UKHSA, IOM, and the Red Cross - to evaluate emergency coordination systems, identify preparedness weaknesses, and strengthen the regional unity that health security depends on.

From the first alert to cross-border collaboration, every simulated decision was a chance to sharpen our response. The exercise was a powerful reminder: preparedness is not a one-time event, it's a continuous commitment. And Botswana is fully committed to that journey, alongside our neighbours.

Because when the next outbreak emerges, we won't just hope for the best. We'll be ready.

Democratic Republic of Congo: 5,584 confirmed cases | 2,680 confirmed deaths

Uganda: 20 confirmed cases | 2 confirmed deaths

France: 1 confirmed case | 0 confirmed deaths
