A Consumer Reports investigation has found cancer causing chemicals in popular synthetic braiding hair brands including Darling Braid, Sensationnel, Magic Fingers, Sassy Collection. Shake-N-Go, Hbegant and Debut.
The study which was published on 27 February 2025 found that three of the ten tested products contained benzene, a carcinogen that is highly regulated and discouraged for use in laboratories because of the potential to cause leukemia.
Additionally, 90% of the products had unsafe levels of lead, which can cause brain damage, kidney issues, and reproductive harm.
High levels of acetone, a respiratory irritant, were also detected.
Experts warn that these chemicals can be absorbed through the scalp, inhaled, or transferred through hand to mouth contact.
Despite these alarming findings, International Media have reported that Sensationnel and Magic Fingers have denied safety concerns, disputing the testing methodology.
However, with many of these brands being household names, the findings raise serious health concerns.
Health experts advise consumers to limit prolonged use, check for recalls, and seek medical advice if they experience irritation.
With no formal regulation of synthetic braiding hair, consumers are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
