🌞 Belize Heat Alert: Stay Safe During Hot Weather! 🇧🇿

With Belize’s warm tropical climate, it’s important to take extra care during periods of extreme heat. High temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially for older adults, young children, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and people living with conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day—even before you feel thirsty.

👒 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and protect yourself with a hat or umbrella when outdoors.

🌴 Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (approximately 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) whenever possible.

🚿 Cool off with a shower, a damp cloth, or by spending time in a cool, shaded area.

🏠 Keep your home cool by closing curtains during the day and allowing cooler air in during the evening.

🚗 Never leave children, older adults, or pets inside a parked vehicle.

🤝 Check in on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable during hot weather.

🥥 BelCare Nutrition Tip: If you’re spending time outdoors, working in the heat, or enjoying the beach, remember to drink water regularly. You can also support hydration by enjoying water-rich foods like watermelon, oranges, cucumber, or fresh coconut water (without added sugar).

⚠️ Know the warning signs: If someone develops dizziness, confusion, nausea, a very high body temperature, or loses consciousness, move them to a cool place, offer water if they are alert, and seek medical attention immediately. Heatstroke is a medical emergency.

💙 Let’s all do our part to stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another this hot season.
