Ministries and organizations across Belize came together to Pass the Ribbon of Hope, a simple but powerful symbol of shared commitment to mental health, su***de prevention, and the well-being of every person in our country.

As it passes from one organization to the next, it reminds us that the responsibility for mental health does not belong to one ministry, one profession, or one institution.

It belongs to all of us.

World Su***de Prevention Day is observed today, September 10th. 🎗️

The Ministry of Health and Wellness, through the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC), along with its partner, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), continues to engage young people, community leaders, educators, parents, and other stakeholders across Belize as part of ongoing efforts to prevent to***co and alcohol use and promote healthier communities.

The initiative has now reached the Cayo District, where Youth Forums were held in Belmopan and San Ignacio, along with a Community Sensitization Session last week. These engagements provided young people and community members with opportunities to learn about the risks associated with va**ng, to***co, and alcohol use, share their experiences, and explore practical ways to strengthen prevention within their communities.

The nationwide initiative continues with upcoming activities in Belize City, South Side; Dangriga, Stann Creek District; and Punta Gorda, Toledo District.

These activities are part of our commitment to empower young people, strengthen community action, increase awareness, and support the development of healthier, to***co- and alcohol-free environments across Belize.

Together, we can empower our youth, strengthen our communities, and build a healthier Belize.

On Friday, August 28, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology and partners INCAP, UNICEF, and Taiwan ICDF, organized a training session for Nutrition Youth Advocates.

The Nutrition Youth Advocate Program is an aspect of the Healthy Habits, Healthy Schools, Healthy Belize Initiative. The program aims to support and encourage a healthy school culture focused on good nutrition, physical activity, and healthy habits, with youth at the forefront of promoting positive behaviour change among their peers.

On Friday, August 28, 28 high school students and 10 teachers received training and materials to help them organize and create activities that promote health and wellness in their schools. Topics covered during the training included nutrition, physical activity, health promotion, leadership, and drug prevention.

The students were also provided with school bags containing stationery, youth advocate vests, T-shirts, and educational nutrition posters to support the program. They are expected to work alongside their peers and teachers to develop activities that promote health and wellness within their schools.

As the sun rose over Belmopan, it painted the sky in beautiful shades of orange and gold as we gathered to raise our flag in support of World Su***de Prevention Awareness Day which is observed on September 10.
It was a beautiful reminder that even in our darkest moments, a new day can bring hope.
Let’s keep raising awareness.
Let’s keep raising hope.
Let’s keep looking out for one another. 🎗️
