adorned facial tattoos, which signified the higher order of that civilization. European warriors and tribesman wore tattoos for protection and identification. Mayan civilization also adorned tattoos for status, as it is today. Tattooing is the most personal of art forms and sometimes the most emotional one. Rob Monk, the owner of VooDoo Tattoo, USA. Est.1972. Rob was mentored by one of the most renowned tattoo artists of the day, Doc Webb of San Diego, California. VooDoo Tattoo has overseen several successful studios in the USA and abroad…. Black Dragon, Anchor Arts, Tiki Tattoo to mention a few. Rob has also promoted several indigenous start-up tattoo studios throughout the Caribbean. His focus is on local artists and the traditional art of the geographical location. From an early age, Rob explored the many facets of the art world beginning in New York, USA. Initially a street artist, drawing portraits in chalk on the city sidewalks for money and graduating to canvas with showings in galleries and museums. In the late 60’s, Rob was a published photographer for Rock and Roll venues in the USA and abroad. Rob’s experience includes creating sculpted body forms in bronze for art collectors, jewelry making, glass art, custom motorcycles and cars, as well as a furniture maker and boat builder. A college graduate (1981) in Mechanical Engineering and Architectural Engineering. Rob believes that he lives art as it lives within him. Anton Leslie, a local professional tattoo artist, has been inspired by Art from an early age. Born in Placencia Village in 1976, Anton attended Primary Education at Saint John’s Anglican School. He continued his education at Independence High School (IHS) where he completed four years of schooling. While attending IHS, his main interest was Agriculture. In 1992 he was chosen to represent Belize on the national volleyball team for Pan American games. After graduating among the first set of graduates from IHS in 1993, he traveled to the United States, where he played volleyball and soccer. After heavily considering the U.S Marine Core, he decided to move home instead. Back in Belize, Anton dove into his greatest passion of Art. Upon moving home he started a studio, which offered signs, murals, boat decals and logo designs. This business did not fulfill his passion so he progressed to fine art paintings and later discovered his love for tattooing. Anton’s passion to share his love for art with children led to his co-founding of the Outlet Youth Center in Placencia, Belize.
