One year ago today, this little lynx (now known as Lumi) arrived at our doors. Her mother had been killed by a dog, leaving her orphaned with nowhere to go and no one to teach her how to survive.

When she arrived at Wildlife Haven, we knew she had a long road ahead of her. She had an eye injury that complicated her care, and just a couple of months later, she began having severe seizures that nearly took her life.

Our team stayed by her side all day and all night for two weeks, administering medication every three hours as the seizures continued to start up over and over. We did not think she would survive, but our team didn’t give up on her.

We searched for answers and eventually got her into a stable place where she was able to eat on her own. It was a long and difficult two weeks, but little by little, Lumi began to get stronger.

Searching for answers, we sent Lumi to Ontario for an MRI. She was diagnosed with trauma-induced epilepsy, which sadly meant she would require medication for the rest of her life. As much as we hoped she could one day return to the wild, her medical conditions meant that releasing her back to the wild would not be possible.

It was then that we had the privilege of giving her a name: Lumi. We don’t normally name our patients, as we don’t want to get attached (they are headed back to the wild, after all). After months of caring for her, it was a bittersweet moment to realize that her future would look different than we had first hoped.

After nine months in our care, Lumi began the next chapter of her life at Assiniboine Park Zoo. Now she is thriving in her new home and has become an incredible ambassador for her species, helping people connect with and better understand lynx. She is a true testament to resilience and the power of a second chance.

Lumi’s story didn’t end the way we had hoped when she first arrived. But sometimes, giving wildlife a second chance means finding a different path forward. One year later, we are so grateful to look back at that tiny orphaned kitten and see just how far she has come.

Meet the cutest little Franklin’s Gull who came into our care at the beginning of August. He was found in a field unable to stand, and when he arrived at our Animal Hospital, he wasn’t able to use his legs at all.

Our team started hydrotherapy to help him build strength. This involved 5–10 minutes of swimming in a small tub or pool 4 times a day. The water helped keep him buoyant, allowing him to move and use his legs with less pressure while he worked on regaining strength.

After four days of swimming, one of our team members captured this moment - his first time standing on his own in his incubator!

He was released back to the wild a couple of days ago! We’re so happy this gull is doing better and ready to head south before the cold weather hits. Safe travels, little guy! 🤍

Our Rehabilitation Manager, Carter, is getting ready for our upcoming golf tournament... but according to the wildlife here, his swing could use a little more practice.

Every year, Cypher Environmental hosts an incredible golf tournament that brings together a community of wildlife supporters for a day of fun, friendly competition, and raising funds for wildlife care.

All funds raised help provide lifesaving care for injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife across Manitoba—from emergency medical treatments and medications to food and rehabilitation supplies.

Last year, this amazing event raised $50,000 to support wildlife care at Wildlife Haven, helping thousands of wild animals on their journey back to the wild.

Join us for a great day on the course, support Manitoba’s wildlife, and see if Carter’s swing has improved by tournament day!

Some of you may remember this female Red Fox from the St. Boniface area of Winnipeg that came into our care at the beginning of July. She was suffering from mange and needed treatment to give her a chance at survival.

We’re thrilled to share that she’s back where she belongs! After weeks of care, she made a full recovery and has been released into the wild, healthy and mange-free. 🧡

This Snapping Turtle arrived at Wildlife Haven after getting a fishing hook lodged deep in its neck. The turtle was rushed to our animal hospital where our team performed surgery to carefully remove the hook, clean the site, and close the wound. Despite our team's best efforts, the trauma was too severe, and the turtle passed away shortly after. 😢

If you are out fishing this summer, please remember to dispose of hooks and broken line properly! You could be helping to save a turtle's life.

Meet a little Muskrat that’s in care in our animal hospital! This little guy arrived at the beginning of June after he was orphaned during a dog interaction that killed his mother. Thankfully, he wasn’t injured in the process, but we still needed to take on his full-time care.

He started with feedings four times a day, as he still would have been nursing from his mother, and was eventually transitioned to salads and other solid foods.

He’s now been in care for two months and has been upgraded to a bigger space to gain essential skills—like swimming! Muskrats are amazing swimmers and can stay underwater for up to 17 minutes. Their little webbed feet make them incredible at paddling through the water.

This little Hummingbird arrived a few days ago after being found on the side of the road in Dunnottar, Manitoba with her wings splayed and breathing heavily.

When she arrived at our animal hospital, she was moved into an incubator and we attempted to hand-feed every 5–10 minutes. After one hour of intensive feeding, she started perching and even attempted to fly.

Our team now has made a DIY syringe stand with a perching branch just in front of it, and she was thankfully seen feeding well from the stand. ❤️

We’re really hoping she can make a full recovery. Thank you to the rescuer who noticed her and brought her in for help.
