Formed in 1984 by a group of environmentally concerned citizens who cared about the successful rehabilitation of injured, sick and orphaned wildlife, Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre was first known by the name Manitoba Wildlife Rehabilitation Organization (MWRO). The volunteers started the organization out of their backyards and opened a centre in 1993 in Glenlea, Manitoba. The centre current

ly operates in Île des Chênes, Manitoba - only 8 minutes from Winnipeg. The 10,000 sqft Wildlife Haven Campus includes a Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, a Wildlife Ambassador Wing, and the Murray Education Centre. Wildlife Haven owns 18 acres of land, where you'll find the Outdoor Campus with animal enclosures, a naturalized wetland and more! For over 36 years, Wildlife Haven has been rehabilitating injured, sick and orphaned wildlife from all over Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Wildlife Haven is a volunteer-driven, registered charity dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured, sick and orphaned wildlife for their return back to the wild, providing education services to the community and engaging volunteers in a rewarding experience. Since 1984, over 50,000 injured and orphaned wildlife have been cared for. Wildlife Haven relies on the generous support of volunteers and donations to operate. The Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre and Campus is located on Treaty 1 territory, ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. Wildlife Haven is honoured to care for wildlife from all ancestral lands in Manitoba. We are committed to working in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in educating current and future generations about the importance of respect and peaceful co-existence with wild animals, the land, water, and all living beings.

Don’t let that cute face fool you… this little Pine Marten is a fierce predator at heart!

We added a cat tree to her enclosure and she wasted no time checking it out, going to battle with the hanging toy ball.

A couple of weeks ago, a Hoary Bat was found grounded in downtown Winnipeg following a thunderstorm. While our team could not perform an immediate rescue, one of our members went downtown the following evening to search for the bat. She found her lying on her back in the rain, rescued her, and brought her to the Wildlife Haven Animal Hospital for an assessment. The bat was noticeably heavier than normal for her species.

Our team placed her in the Bat Room to rest and recover, with the plan to reassess her and, if all went well, release her back into the wild. However, when a team member went back in to check on her, she heard tiny noises. After a closer inspection, she noticed the Hoary Bat had given birth to two healthy babies!

The two pups are currently hanging upside down, latched onto their mother with their milk teeth. Our team is now making sure the new mom is getting plenty to eat (mealworms, as you can see in the video), and also giving her as much quiet space as possible to prevent stress and allow her to nurse and raise her babies in peace. ❤️

New ladder for our Pine Marten patient to climb! It was an instant favourite. ❤️

Pine Martens are known for their incredible climbing skills and spend a lot of time high up in the trees. Giving enrichment items like this ladder is an important part of her rehabilitation, as it allows her to practice natural behaviours and build the strength she will need once she is released back into the wild!

UPDATE: Thank you for the overwhelming response! We’ve had a tremendous amount of volunteer applications. Applications are now closed as we connect with all the interested candidates. If you’re still interested in helping, please stay tuned for applications to reopen in the near future. Our small team is doing its best to connect with everyone in a timely manner.

—————————————————————-

We are in urgent need of volunteers.

Our animal hospital is busier than ever. We are averaging 30-40 new patient admissions a day, and just yesterday we had 185 calls to our Centre about injured and orphaned wildlife. Our team is stretched to its limit with the number of animals coming through our doors.

Here are the roles we need immediate help filling:

🔸 Hospital Support:
Our hospital needs help with laundry, dishes, sweeping, mopping, and general cleaning. This role does not involve direct wildlife care, but it is essential to keeping our hospital running and ensuring we can care for patients properly.

🔸Transport Drivers:
We operate several drop-off and holding locations across Winnipeg where wildlife is temporarily placed before transport to our centre. We need drivers who can pick up animals from these locations and bring them safely to our hospital. (Locations include: Assiniboine Park Zoo Wildlife Rescue & Drop-off, Bridgwater Veterinary Clinic & Wild Birds Unlimited).

🔸 Rescuers:
We receive over 100 calls each day about wildlife in need, but often don’t have enough responders available. We are looking for experienced, confident individuals who are comfortable assisting with wildlife rescues and transporting animals to our hospital.

Our greatest need is for volunteers who can commit to consistent support during our peak season, ideally a minimum of one shift per week.

If you are able to help in any of these roles, please visit wildlifehaven.ca/volunteer to create an account to fill out the application. We would be so grateful for your support.
