🤍 Struggling with low milk supply? Here’s what I want you to know as an IBCLC!
Supplements are only ONE piece of the puzzle!
One of the most effective ways to increase milk production is through frequent, effective milk removal, whether that’s through breastfeeding, pumping, or a combination of both.
If you’re struggling with low supply, a comprehensive lactation assessment can help us understand WHY. We may need to look at your baby’s latch and milk transfer, feeding frequency, pumping effectiveness, hormonal factors, and other potential barriers to milk production.
As PART of an individualized care plan, herbal supplements may be another tool to consider! 🌿
Here are a few options from Rumina Naturals:
🤰 GOAT’S RUE | Preparing for breastfeeding
Often considered by moms who have:
✨ PCOS
✨ A history of low milk supply
✨ Minimal breast growth during pregnancy
If you’re pregnant, always consult your maternity care provider before starting herbal supplements, as pregnancy safety data are limited.
🍼 THE MILKY WAY | Early postpartum
Designed for moms working to establish and maintain their milk supply.
✨ Establishing milk production
✨ Exclusively or primarily pumping
✨ Looking for additional supply support
🌿 MILK APLENTY | Supply dips
Designed for moms experiencing low supply or changes in milk production.
✨ High stress or poor sleep
✨ Hormonal changes
✨ Supply dips after the return of your period
🌱 WHY RUMINA NATURALS?
✅ Proudly FENUGREEK FREE! Avoiding fenugreek eliminates fenugreek-specific concerns, including potential digestive upset in mom and baby, allergic reactions, and possible thyroid-related interactions.
✅ Formulated by health practitioners.
✅ Rumina’s tinctures are designed to be used together when appropriate, allowing for individualized support based on your needs.
🌿 Rumina Naturals is RESTOCKED at Nourish First Lactation!

When things are not what you picture them to be in your head..
Usually I do a big fancy meal and have a bunch of family over but I worked night shifts the whole weekend and even though I was exhausted, I decided to put a turkey dinner together at the last minute. 😅
Much like our feeding journeys we tend to picture them playing out in a certain way but then when they don’t look like the ones on social media or what our mothers told us they would be like, it’s a huge shock to our system.
I always picture these perfectly set up thanksgiving meals with place settings that would make Joanna Gaines proud.
But I did what I could with the time I had and the energy I had.
It’s hard to pivot sometimes, and there is an amount of grief when things don’t go as you thought or hoped they would.
But do yourself a favour and try to pick out some wins. Some good moments. And remember time is so fleeting. So grab onto the good.
My dinner was not how I typically do it but
* our 19 month old smothered himself in cranberry sauce and made us laugh so hard. 🤍
* our 8 year old ate turkey for the first time - HUGE win. And was so proud of himself. 🤍
So Happy Thanksgiving friends - for those of your struggling through your feeding journey - pick a win you had lately, and take time to grieve the things that haven’t gone as planned. 🤍

Some families begin in the way we expect. Others take a very different road to get there. 🤍
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting a couple who travelled from overseas to the Lower Mainland as they prepare to welcome their baby through surrogacy.
The mother has been working incredibly hard to induce lactation so she can breastfeed their baby. Months of preparation, medications, pumping, learning, planning - all before she has even had the chance to hold her baby.
And I could already tell motherhood had begun when the guilt started creeping in.
She was comparing herself to the huge bags of milk we so often see online and wondering if she should be making more, pumping more, doing more.
All I could think was - look at everything you are already doing. 💜
We can be so hard on ourselves, while everyone looking in and sees something completely different. I saw an incredibly dedicated, nurturing mother who has already put so much love and effort into caring for her baby.
That baby is already so deeply loved.
Their journey to parenthood may look different, but that is exactly why I wanted to share a small piece of their story, with their permission.
Families can come together in so many different ways. What matters most is the love, commitment, support and care that surrounds that baby.
I left this appointment feeling incredibly grateful to be a small part of the beginning of their story. 🤍
And for anyone wondering - yes, it is possible to induce lactation without experiencing pregnancy. Every journey and every milk supply will look different, and supplementation may still be part of the picture, but breastfeeding can be about so much more than how many millilitres you make. 💞
If induced lactation is something you’re considering, my DMs are always open.

Hey friends! 👋
I’m a little late to recognize world breastfeeding week but I was busy doing mom things, working, and of course, seeing other mommas and babies. 🩵
It’s hard to put into words everything that comes to mind when I think about breastfeeding.
For me it’s thoughts of beautiful memories, creating connection with the tiny humans I carried in my belly and then went through hell@to bring them into this world.
It’s thoughts of pride. I went from a first time mom who knew NOTHING. So naive. To gaining all of the knowledge I have today that ultimately allowed me to, for the first time out of my 3 babies, exclusively breastfeed.
But it’s also thoughts of pain. Those lonely days and nights of pumping, feeding, crying, never feeling like you’re doing enough, feeling like nobody truly understands what you’re going through. Overstimulation. Wanting it to work but also feeling so DONE.
It’s those thoughts and everything in between.
As a mom of 3 and an IBCLC, my hope is that we talk about this MORE. Mommas are still left feeling overwhelmed, blindsided, and alone postpartum.
As an IBCLC my job is to encourage breastfeeding. But to be honest reality is I want to encourage YOU first. We cannot be who we need to be for our babies if we don’t take care of us first. And sometimes breastfeeding falls into place a lot smoother when we feel confident and supported. It really does help oxytocin release! 😘
My promise to you is as I grow and learn more all the time, that I pass on that knowledge to you and then support you in whatever decision you feel fits best for you and your family.
Because there is a peace that comes with confidence. And I want that for everyone one of you.
Happy belated World Breastfeeding Week! 🩷

I got torticollis in my neck when I was breastfeeding my second baby.
I was told it was from looking down so much while breastfeeding.
I was absolutely blindsided by low milk supply and postpartum depression with my first, that with my second I apparently became obsessed with watching and making sure my son was breastfeeding properly this time.
While as a mom of 3, a nurse, and an IBCLC I definitely encourage you to watch your feeds to make sure you know what active feeds look like, but this is your reminder to also look up every once in a while.
Take a walk outside. Look up at the sky. Breathe in the fresh air. Look at the home around you where you are building your beautiful little family.
Do something you love. 💗
Remember who you are, and look forward to who you’re becoming as a parent.
I know how overwhelming feeding and postpartum can be, trust me. But I really want to encourage you to remember this too shall pass.
For good or for bad.
These small little beautiful moments will pass, and the extremely stressful moments will pass.
So soak it all in. Gather all the education you can. Make informed decisions. Watch for active feeds, but take time to just be skin to skin and love your babe. 🤍
If you’re needing support through this time - DM me to book a consult.

I’m hosting a relaxed moms’ group at Solstice Midwives for anyone navigating the postpartum season and looking for connection, support, and a place to simply be with other moms who get it.

In light of recent celebrations of mothers everywhere - here are my wishes and thoughts.
Because my Mother’s Day weekend was jam packed with having 2 extra 12 year olds stay over, an all day track meet that finished with me driving 6 children around, and driving. And more driving. And snacks. So many snacks. 😂
Here we are. I finally have a chance to sit and reflect.
I want it all for my children. And I’ve learned a lot over the years of what that means. When I was a first time mother I found myself in the pits of postpartum and not being able to provide enough milk for my baby. Because of that emotional trauma, and many other reasons, I wanted to create a perfect little life for my kids.
But as I grew, and my kids grew. I realized instead of perfection I wanted to teach them how to grow on their own. To become decent human beings in this world.
Instead of perfection I realized just sitting with them on the floor, watching them play together, watching their little smiles, is one of the most beautiful things about parenting.
I still want the world for them. But it looks a little different now.
I tell all the parents I see that the best you can do as a parent is to just BE THERE. Gather as much information and education as you can. And then just be there. You are the ones who are with your children every day. You see them. You watch them. You know them.
Just being there, knowing them where they are at, staying curious, and advocating for them. You will find the answers along the way.
You will grow together.
I don’t care what anyone says, I’ll take coffee and chocolate in bed, flowers, and hand made gifts any day.
And just an hour to myself in the morning. 😅 And a nice long run to myself. 💪🏼
Happy Mother’s Day friends,
Sarah 💗

You know you’re an IBCLC when!
Both my husband and our baby boy were sleeping soundly while I lay awake, doing what I do best: overthinking. 😅
And of course, he’s snoring. So I got curious. I tried the sleeping tongue posture hold. 😜
Note the breaks in snoring, this is when I’m pushing up on his chin to hold his tongue to the roof of his mouth.
Check out my reel on ‘sleeping tongue posture hold’ and learn why oral function matters from the beginning so we can avoid these sleepless nights!
I mean, who am I kidding, I’ll still be awake overthinking sometimes, but you can’t have it all. 😜

There has been a lot of conflicting information online lately about sunflower lecithin vs. choline for clogged ducts and mastitis support.
So, let’s go to the evidence. ⬇️
Choline is an important nutrient in lactation and can absolutely play a role in overall maternal support. But the current ABM mastitis spectrum protocol still includes sunflower or soy lecithin as part of management alongside ice, ibuprofen, and physiological feeding.
When the evidence is nuanced, statements like “never use this” or “this is the only safe option” can create fear and confusion rather than support informed care.
As IBCLCs, our role is not to use fear-based messaging or oversimplified rules. Our role is to assess the full picture, provide accurate and unbiased information, explain risks and benefits, and support families in making informed decisions.
Context matters.
A supplement used short term for an acute issue is not the same as something taken daily long term. And if clogged ducts are happening repeatedly, the answer is usually not to just keep taking supplements. It’s time to step back and look at the full feeding picture, inflammation, breast drainage, pumping patterns, oversupply, latch, and transfer.
The goal is to understand why it is happening and help families move forward with a plan that makes sense for them.
It can be incredibly confusing when there’s conflicting information on social media, but spoiler alert 🚨: it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Ask questions. Ask for evidence. Tell your story. Express what you need. And then make a decision that feels right for you and your family.
If you are experiencing clogged ducts - DM me so we can create a plan that works specifically for you and your baby.
