✨ Did You Know? You can be iron deficient without being anemic.
Iron deficiency without anemia (IDA) is more common than many people realize, and it can still leave you feeling awful.
Common symptoms may include:
• Fatigue or low energy
• Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
• Headaches
• Hair shedding
• Shortness of breath with activity
• Restless legs
• Feeling cold
• Reduced exercise tolerance
So why does iron deficiency happen? It usually comes down to one (or more) of these three things:
🩸 1. Iron loss – Heavy menstrual bleeding, blood donation, gastrointestinal bleeding, or other sources of blood loss.
🥗 2. Not enough iron intake – Diets low in iron-rich foods or increased iron requirements (such as pregnancy or endurance training).
🩺 3. Poor absorption – Conditions like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, certain stomach surgeries, or medications that reduce stomach acid can make it difficult to absorb iron.
Here’s the frustrating part… iron is a high-maintenance supplement. 😅
✔️ It often causes constipation, nausea, or stomach upset.
✔️ It has to be taken away from certain foods and medications.
✔️ And even when everything goes perfectly… it can take months to restore your iron stores.
One formulation I often recommend is Palafer CF because many people find it gentler on the stomach while still providing a good amount of elemental iron along with vitamin C to support absorption. This is simply a clinical preference, we are not sponsored, compensated, or affiliated with the brand in any way.
⚠️ Remember: More iron is not better. Too much iron can be harmful and may even damage organs over time. Iron supplementation isn’t right for everyone and should ideally be guided by your healthcare provider and blood work.
If you’ve been struggling with unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or other symptoms, it’s worth having a conversation with your healthcare provider about whether iron deficiency could be contributing.
