Hospice centres are integrating non-medical end of life support!!

More hospice organizations in Canada and the United States are slowly starting to hire on Death Doulas, particularly for legacy work, family support, advance care planning, and bedside companionship.

As long as they have existed, hospice has focused mostly on the medical side of dying. Physicians, nurses, personal support workers, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers each have defined roles. While these professionals provide incredible care, there is a very real gap in the time and emotional presence families need.

Rather than replace medical staff, Death Doulas complement the care already being provided. They have the flexibility to spend extended time with patients and families, helping process fears, have difficult conversations, create comfort care, provide advocacy, and navigate the emotional and practical aspects of dying.

This growing collaboration reflects a broader and much more mature recognition, that a good death is about more than symptom management. In fact, if emotional and spiritual needs are not met, most symptoms will become aggravated and worsen. A good death is about dignity, connection, choice, meaning, and ensuring that neither the person who is dying nor the people who love them have to walk the journey alone.
