Out for an evening forage, we stumbled across clusters of these mushrooms growing along a gravel road.

After doing some research, we’re wondering if they might be “fried chicken mushrooms,” but we’re not 100% certain yet. Funny name - one I won’t forget 🍗🍄

We’ve brought them home to take a spore print, which should help!

What do you think? Have you come across these before? 🍄

Cleavers (also known as Catchweed) 🌿

While our foraging we came across this humble wild plant - one of nature’s most beloved lymphatic herbs. Traditionally used to support lymphatic flow.

Cleavers help encourage the body’s natural detoxification processes and promote healthy fluid movement.

One of the simplest ways to enjoy it is as a cold infusion: place fresh Cleavers in a jar of cold water, let it steep overnight, and enjoy the refreshing herbal infusion the next day.

Wild, gentle, and abundant - sometimes the most powerful plants are growing right beneath our feet.

Have you worked with Cleavers before? Let us know below.

It’s an oyster kind of day 🍄

After days of rain, the forest gifted us an abundance of beautiful oyster mushrooms.

Some were growing so high up the trees that G had to reach with a long branch to coax them down! (Reminded me of my younger days in the Trinidad 🇹🇹 picking mangoes)

For dinner - we turned our harvest into a beautiful grilled oyster mushroom dish, finished with fresh violets from the garden and spruce tips we gathered a couple of weeks ago, and paired it with our homemade dandelion root kombucha.

Benefits of today’s wild ingredients:

🍄 Oyster Mushrooms
• Rich in antioxidants
• Source of B vitamins and minerals
• Supports immune health

🌲 Spruce Tips
• Naturally high in vitamin C
• Traditionally used to support respiratory wellness
• Packed with antioxidants

💜 Violets
• Rich in antioxidants
• Traditionally used to soothe the throat
• Gentle support for lymphatic health

🌼 Dandelion Root Kombucha
• Contains beneficial organic acids from fermentation
• Traditionally valued for digestive support
• Crafted from dandelion roots harvested from our land

From forest to table, with a little fizz in between.

Wild foraged fiddleheads, lightly grilled and finished with a squeeze of lemon over a silky coconut ramp gravy, paired with shiitake mushrooms, wild thyme, and delicate trout lily leaves & flowers.

A little taste of the forest, plated with love. 🌿✨

When foraging fiddleheads, we often look for the old dried brown stalks that mark healthy ostrich fern patches from previous seasons.

These woody fertile fronds are spore-bearing, releasing spores into the wind, though ostrich ferns spread most efficiently through underground rhizomes.

Fiddleheads are best harvested young - tightly coiled, 2–6 inches tall, and still wrapped in their delicate brown papery covering.

Spring has officially arrived, and today’s foraging gifted us beautiful wild ramps - Known for their rich, garlicky flavour, ramps are packed with vitamins A and C, support heart health, and have natural detoxifying properties.

(Twice the vitamin C than one orange)

In the kitchen, they shine in elevated dishes - think ramp pesto, sautéed with eggs, folded into risotto, or grilled whole for a smoky, earthy bite. A true seasonal delicacy that connects us right back to the forest floor.

If you could talk to your 8-year-old self: what would you say?

We asked this question on the streets of Bancroft infront of the fabulous and a couple at our cold plunge event; including 11 year old Johnny ; Happy Birthday John!

The answers were funny, honest, and unexpectedly deep.

What would you say to your younger self… if you really gave yourself the time to write it?

Come explore that with us at our Dear Younger Me Workshop
