Yesterday, I met with a mom and her daughter who is a competitive dancer.
She told me she wanted to get stronger.
Not because she was injured.
Not because she had to.
Because she wanted higher jumps, better turns, and more confidence in her dancing.
And I thought... YES. 👏
Here’s the thing:
Dancers, cheerleaders, and gymnasts are athletes.
We ask them to jump, land, sprint, tumble, leap, absorb huge forces, balance on one leg, and perform with incredible power and technique.
Yet in many artistic sports, “conditioning” often focuses on cardio, endurance, flexibility, or stability. Typical exercises use bands and bodyweight. Never truly challenging the muscle.
Those qualities are absolutely important, but they don’t maximize muscle growth, strength, or power.
Struggling with falling out of your turns? You need to work on generating rotational power.
Trying to get your aerial? You need lower body explosiveness to help get you up and over.
Muscles burning and feeling heavy by the end of your routine? They need strength and endurance to give them the capacity to handle a 2 minute, powerful routine.
All of this comes from progressive strength training.
Building muscle increases your capacity to produce force. More force means more powerful jumps, stronger tumbling, better control, improved endurance throughout routines, and a body that’s better prepared for the demands of training and competition.
Almost every field, court, and ice sport includes weight lifting as part of athletic development.
Artistic athletes deserve that same advantage.
At FAME Physio, we combine physiotherapy, strength & conditioning, and athlete wellness to help dancers, cheerleaders, gymnasts, and female athletes build stronger, healthier bodies that can perform at their highest level.
