4 foods I often recommend limiting when you’re dealing with a sinus infection πŸ‘ƒ

One of the most common questions I get from patients is whether diet can affect sinus symptoms. While food isn’t the root cause of a sinus infection, certain foods may contribute to inflammation, mucus production, or symptom flare-ups in some individuals.

Dairy products can sometimes make mucus feel thicker, making congestion seem more noticeable.

Foods high in added sugar may promote inflammation throughout the body, which is the last thing your immune system needs when it’s trying to fight an infection.

For individuals who are sensitive to salicylates or histamine, foods high in these compounds can sometimes contribute to nasal congestion, facial pressure, headaches, and other sinus-related symptoms.

That said, every patient is different. What triggers symptoms in one person may have no effect on another. The most important things you can do while recovering are staying well hydrated, getting adequate rest, and following the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare provider.

If sinus infections seem to be a recurring issue for you, it may be time to look beyond the infection itself and investigate underlying causes such as allergies, chronic inflammation, nasal polyps, or structural concerns within the nose and sinuses.

When I opened North ENT, my goal was to create more than just a clinic. I wanted to build a space where patients across Vaughan and the GTA feel cared for, listened to, and confident in the care they’re receiving.

You see the clinic, the credentials on the wall, and the doors open to patients, but you don’t necessarily see the years of training, sacrifice, learning, and unwavering dedication it took to get here.

Medicine has never simply been a career for me. It has been a true passion rooted in a deep commitment to helping people feel better, breathe better, hear better, and improve their quality of life.

Three of the most common procedures we perform in ENT might sound intimidating… but they’re procedures I discuss with patients and families every day. πŸ‘‚πŸ‘ƒ

A tonsillectomy is the removal of the tonsils, often recommended for concerns like recurrent tonsil infections, enlarged tonsils, or breathing and sleep issues.

A myringotomy is a small procedure involving the eardrum, commonly performed to help drain fluid from the middle ear and improve chronic ear infections or hearing concerns. Sometimes this includes the placement of ear tubes.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to improve sinus drainage and address chronic sinus disease when symptoms aren’t responding well to medical treatment alone.

Every patient, every anatomy, and every situation is different, which is why having a thorough assessment and conversation about your options is so important.

I’m proud to care for patients of all ages at North ENT Clinic in Vaughan, and I see patients from all across the GTA.

If you think you or your child may benefit from seeing an ENT specialist, referrals can be sent from your family doctor, pediatrician, or nurse practitioner.

ENT concerns don’t only affect adults as many children experience issues that deserve timely, specialist care. I regularly see infants, children, and teens for a wide range of ENT conditions, and I work closely with families to ensure kids feel safe, supported, and heard throughout the process.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Parents may want to consider an ENT referral for concerns such as:
▫️Frequent ear infections or persistent fluid in the ears
▫️ Hearing or speech delays
▫️ Chronic nasal congestion or mouth breathing
▫️ Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
▫️ Snoring or sleep-disordered breathing
▫️ Recurrent sore throats or sinus infections
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Early assessment can make a meaningful difference, especially when symptoms are affecting sleep, learning, or development.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I currently have shorter wait times at North ENT Clinic, and I see paediatric patients from across Vaughan and the Greater Toronto Area.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you have concerns about your child’s ear, nose, or throat health, speak with your primary care provider about a referral to see Dr. Aviva Fliker. Early care matters and help is available.

At North ENT Clinic in Vaughan, we’re working hard to create a different kind of experience for families and parents.

Of course, compassionate, collaborative ENT care is at the heart of what we do. We believe in truly listening to our patients, taking concerns seriously, and working together to support their ear, nose, and throat health.

But we also know that medical appointments can be stressful, especially for children and their parents.

That’s why we’ve put so much thought into every detail of our clinic environment β€” from the comforting colours and carefully selected wallpapers to our welcoming, feel-good waiting room and state-of-the-art equipment.

Our goal is simple: to make families feel as comfortable, supported, and cared for as possible from the moment they walk through our doors.

Because healthcare experiences matter, too.

ENT concerns can affect so much more than people realize, including your sleep, your breathing, your hearing, your voice, your comfort, and your day-to-day quality of life.

At North ENT Clinic in Vaughan, I see patients for a wide range of concerns including sinus and nasal issues, chronic congestion, hearing concerns, swallowing and throat symptoms, voice changes, snoring and sleep-related concerns, ear conditions, and more. No two patients are exactly alike, which is why taking the time to listen and create an individualized plan is so important to me.

I’m proud to care for patients from Vaughan and across the GTA at North ENT Clinic. If you think an ENT assessment may be beneficial, the first step is typically obtaining a referral from your family physician or nurse practitioner.

If you’ve been looking for answers, relief, or specialist care that feels collaborative and thorough, I’d be happy to see you.

Q-tips and ears… let’s talk about it. πŸ‘‚πŸ»

One of the most common things I tell patients in clinic is this: your ears are often better left alone than β€œcleaned” with cotton swabs.

I know it can feel satisfying, but Q-tips tend to push wax deeper into the ear canal rather than remove it. This can lead to impacted wax, irritation, discomfort, reduced hearing, and sometimes even injury to the ear canal or eardrum.

Fun fact: ear wax actually serves a purpose. It helps trap debris, protects the ear canal, and your ears are designed to naturally clear themselves in most cases.

If you’re dealing with blocked ears, hearing changes, discomfort, or recurrent wax buildup, it may be time for a proper assessment rather than reaching for the Q-tips.

Your ears will thank you. πŸ™‚

One of the most meaningful parts of my work as an ENT specialist is building relationships with patients and helping them feel truly heard throughout their care journey.

ENT concerns can have a significant impact on daily life, comfort, confidence, sleep, communication, and overall wellbeing, which is why I believe patient care should always be approached with both clinical expertise and compassion.

I’m incredibly grateful for the kind words from my patients and for the trust they place in me and our team at North ENT Clinic. It is truly a privilege to care for patients across the GTA each and every day.
