I am someone who has always moved my body with ease! Was I the most flexible or the strongest person in the room? Absolutely not! But I have always been able to move easily through postures of all shapes and forms.
Over the last year or so, my hips have not been very happy with my yoga practice. I’ve heard conversations in the yoga world about hip injuries being pretty common for us yoga lifers. It’s humbling when I try to move into a simple position that I’ve done thousands of times, and my body puts the brakes on and says, “No way am I doing that!”
I’ve practiced yoga since I was 20 years old, and it has been my go-to for pain management. It’s been a learning process figuring out what else I can use. I’ve found a few different modalities that have helped ease the discomfort, the most impactful being acupuncture and, of course, my bike rides!
I don’t want this post to turn you away from yoga if you’re considering it for pain management. I once had a chiropractor tell me that my pain comes from doing too much of a good thing. For most of my yoga career, I’ve taught an average of 12 classes a week. Plus, for many of those years, I also maintained a consistent home practice. The average person isn’t doing yoga 10 to 20 times a week.
Because of this discomfort, I’ve started to pull back on my teaching schedule. I’m blessed to have found and trained some amazing teachers who are now offering classes at the studio!
I don’t know where this road will take me, but just like I tell you to do in class, I’m listening to my body, and we’re working together. ☺️
