Question: Do we really need to eat breakfast?
Answer: What does the research say?
There is no simple yes or no answer. Whether you need breakfast depends on who you are and what your goals are.
For most healthy adults, eating breakfast is a personal choice. There is no strong evidence that everyone must eat breakfast to stay healthy. What matters most is what you eat over the whole day and eating healthy consistently. If you enjoy eating breakfast, try to include protein, fiber or slow-digesting carbohydrates, and keep it low in saturated fat and added sugar.
Some studies have found that people who eat breakfast tend to have a lower risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease (Yu et al., 2023). However, these studies only show a link. They cannot prove that eating breakfast actually prevents disease. It may be that people who eat breakfast also have other healthy habits, such as exercising regularly or eating balanced meals throughout the day.
When it comes to weight loss, breakfast is often called “the most important meal of the day”, with claims that it boosts metabolism or prevents overeating later. However, high-quality research found that people who ate breakfast actually consumed more calories overall during the day (Sievert et al., 2018). Other research shows that some people who skip breakfast by practicing intermittent fasting may eat fewer calories overall. (Gabel et al., 2018).
This does not mean you should skip breakfast to lose weight. Weight loss depends on how many calories you eat compared to how many you burn. You can lose weight whether you eat breakfast or not.
Some groups may benefit more clearly from eating breakfast. Strong research shows that children and teenagers tend to do better in school when they eat breakfast (Adolphus et al., 2016). People with diabetes or blood sugar problems may also find that a balanced breakfast helps keep their blood sugar steady during the day. (Chowdhury et al., 2016).
In summary, breakfast is not required for everyone. The most important thing is eating a balanced, healthy diet that works for you.
