Makers Making Change Makers Making Change connects people with disabilities to volunteer makers to create low cost assist Makers Making Change is helping bridge that gap.

80% of people with disabilities use an assistive device and 27% are at least one device short, often citing cost as a barrier. We offer a platform for device users and disability professionals to collaborate with volunteer makers to build solutions that meet their needs. All assistive devices in our library are free to access and curated. Browse through a wide variety of devices like simple bottle key turners to high-tech options like sip and puff mouse.

Ways to get involved in 3D printing assistive tech:

1. Connect with your state assistive tech program (AT3center.net)

2. Find a chapter of a local maker group (like Makers Making Change , TOM Tikkun Olam Makers, E-nable, MakeGood)

3. Check out public libraries, universities, maker spaces, etc.

James graduated high school earlier this year and has been working with Ability New Brunswick Inc. / Capacité Nouveau-Brunswick Inc. where he helps people with disabilities navigate government services, rent accessible equipment, and connect with others. As a person with disabilities himself, it’s not just work — it’s something he’s truly passionate about.

So, when a co-worker told him about another opportunity — the micro-grant — he decided to apply.

Daughter and father Alyssa and Jules have always enjoyed working together tinkering on different projects — even at the age of two, Alyssa enjoyed spending time with her father in the garage as he worked on old cars.

So, it was only natural when Alyssa decided to volunteer as a leader, building assistive devices for Canadians with disabilities, that she’d rope in her father. Since then, they’ve built and delivered nearly 30 devices, many of which have gone to CHEO.

Our friends at Thingiverse are hosting a new assistive technology design challenge for makers called the A.B.L.E. (Assistive Builds for Living, by Everyone) Challenge.

To take part in the challenge, you’ll design a device or tool that can help people with disabilities, and submit it to the Thingiverse community so that it can be fabricated by makers.

Our Technical Manager Jake McIvor is honoured to be part of the judging panel. There’s a cash prize for the top three entries. All submissions are due on September 21st. https://www.thingiverse.com/challenges/thingiversable

PART 3 of our device evolution series

⌛ BEFORE:
Designed in 2017, the Bottle Opener has been one of the most popular Aid for Daily Living (ADL) in the Device Library. The original version came in one only one size, and was intended specifically for water bottle sized caps.

⌛ AFTER:
After receiving feedback from users, we redesigned the opener in 2021. The updated design prints faster and features rounded edges for a more comfortable grip. It's also available in five sizes and comes with a printable sizing guide to help people choose the right one. Now, users can open everything from small water bottles to large 2L juice containers.
