Kids Brain Health is in Galway, Ireland for the European Academy of Childhood-onset Disability (EACD) Congress!

This year's theme says it all: "Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad"—"Encourage the young and they will flourish." The congress tracks are built around the internationally recognized "F-words for Child Development": Functioning, Family, Fitness, Fun, Friends, and Future.

We are proud that the F-words started as a Kids Brain Health Network-funded project. It is a strengths-based framework that shifts the focus from medical deficits to a child's holistic potential—offering a meaningful lens for supporting children and young people living with disabilities, and their families.

Proud to be part of the conversation and looking forward to connecting with colleagues from across the childhood disability community. 💙

This National Indigenous History Month, we recognize the importance of community-led care rooted in culture, relationships, and trust.

“Walking Together in Care: A Six Nations Project” supports children and families through Indigenous-led approaches that honour traditional knowledge, strengthen community connections, and improve access to meaningful care.

At Kids Brain Health Network, we are proud to support projects that walk alongside communities, not ahead of them.

KBH+’s CEO, Geoff Pradella, will participate in the panel alongside Heather Brown, UofA Aiden Lab, and Karen Kelm, Fragile X Canada, with Daniel Moreno De Luca, PRISMA Group, moderating. Together, they will explore how we build more inclusive, community-informed systems and the real partnerships, barriers, and pathways that lead to better outcomes for people with genetic and neurodevelopmental conditions.

05/30/2026

The FIERCE project is working to better understand and improve supports for youth with ADHD who experience anxiety — a combination that can significantly impact wellbeing, learning, and everyday functioning.

Up to 50% of youth with ADHD also experience anxiety, making early, effective support especially important. FIERCE is evaluating and adapting a cognitive-behavioural intervention designed to help youth build coping skills, reduce anxiety, and improve quality of life.

By working closely with youth, families, clinicians, and researchers, this project is helping identify what works — and how to make effective mental health supports more accessible in real-world settings.

Because when we invest early in mental health, we don only just treat challenges — we build skills, confidence, and resilience that last a lifetime 🌿

Sometimes, the most powerful ideas happen when lived experience and research come together 💙

Reflecting on her experience in the Family Engagement in Research (FER) course funded by KBHN, shared:

“As a mom of a kid with a special need, to get together with researchers interested in partnership with parents was a very good experience
I feel I’m in the right place as a parent with lived experience, and also as someone with a background in research.”

After stepping away from her academic career to focus on her child’s needs, she found renewed purpose in bridging both worlds — lived experience and research — to improve outcomes for children and families.

“I think this is a very good initiative to put together these two opposite forces to work together toward a unique objective.”

This is exactly what the KBH+ Conference 2026 is about.

A place where families, researchers, clinicians, and advocates come together — not just to share knowledge, but to co-create solutions that matter.

As we close out May and our theme “Mental Health Starts Early”, we’re reminded that children’s mental health is shaped in everyday moments — through connection, support, and the systems around them đŸŒ±

At Kids Brain Health, this work is brought to life through innovative, community-driven projects that support children, youth, and families across Canada.

From early intervention programs and caregiver supports, to digital mental health tools, sensory supports, inclusive play, and strengths-based frameworks — our current projects are focused on one shared goal: helping children and youth thrive from the very beginning.

These initiatives are made possible through collaboration with researchers, clinicians, families, and communities working together to turn evidence into real-world impact 💙

If you have been following along this month, we invite you to go deeper — explore the projects that are shaping the future of child and youth mental health.
