If you struggled to find the differences between the two photos, don’t worry—you aren’t failing a test. You’re experiencing a completely normal neurological phenomenon called Change Blindness.
Our brains are constantly taking in massive amounts of visual information. To keep us from short-circuiting, the brain uses a filtering system to focus only on what it deems “important,” often missing unexpected changes right in front of us.
But why are we talking about this during Brain Injury Awareness Month? 🧠
When you sustain a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury, that vital neurological filtering system gets compromised. Here is why change blindness and visual processing matter so much in recovery:
Visual Overload: A healthy brain handles change blindness effortlessly. A concussed brain has to work twice as hard to process the exact same visual environment, which is why grocery stores, busy gyms, or scrolling on your phone can feel deeply overwhelming and trigger instant headaches.
Tracking Subtleties: Just like it’s hard to spot the small changes in these moving images, it can be hard for individuals (and their families) to spot the subtle, shifting symptoms of a concussion—like minor memory gaps, slow processing speeds, or subtle balance issues.
The Role of Vestibular & Oculomotor Therapy: This is why we don’t just treat the neck or recommend rest. We actively test and train visual processing, eye tracking, and complex environmental filtering to help your brain rebuild its efficiency.
How many differences did you actually spot on the first watch?
1️⃣ One or two?
2️⃣ Three or four?
3️⃣ Did you find all of them?
