Myth: Pruning Seals Wounds. Fact: Trees Heal Themselves — Sealant Traps Disease.

For decades, tree care guides recommended painting pruning cuts with wound sealer or tar to "protect" the tree. Arborists now know this does the opposite.

Trees don't heal wounds the way animals do — they COMPARTMENTALIZE them. A process called CODIT (Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees) walls off damaged tissue with chemical barriers and grows new wood around it. Wound sealant traps moisture under the surface, creating an anaerobic environment where decay fungi thrive.

Research from the USDA Forest Service showed that sealed pruning cuts had significantly more internal decay than unsealed cuts after 3 years. The tree's own response outperformed every commercial product tested.

The only thing your tree needs after a clean pruning cut is time.
