Nitric oxide is responsible for many important things happening in your body — and most people don’t even know much about it.

It plays an important role in blood vessel function, circulation, blood pressure regulation, and more.

And here’s the part that makes this especially interesting:

Your NOSE is involved in the process.

Your nasal passages and sinuses are an important source of nitric oxide, which is one reason how you breathe matters.

So what exactly is nitric oxide?

How does nasal breathing support it?

And what does your tongue, sleep, diet, and mouth breathing have to do with the bigger picture?

Here’s what you should know →

Swipe through, and then SAVE this post so you can come back to it later.

Because your breathing habits may be affecting more than you realize.

You’ve probably heard of myofunctional therapy before… you just might not have known it had a name!

Maybe you’ve heard someone say:

👅 “Tongue therapy”
😬 “Jaw therapy”
🌬️ “Mouth breathing exercises”
😋 “Tongue posture”
🧑‍⚕️ “Orofacial therapy”

And thought, “Oh yeah, I’ve heard of that.”

Yep. That’s it! It’s actually called myofunctional therapy — and it’s about so much more than doing a few tongue exercises.

Myofunctional therapy looks at how the muscles of the mouth, face and jaw work together and helps improve the way they function.

Because things like tongue posture, breathing, swallowing, chewing, lip function and oral habits are all connected.

So if you’ve ever thought…

“I know what that is… I just didn’t know what it was called.” Now you do!

But knowing the name is actually the easy part. Knowing whether it could benefit you or your child is where we come in. 💜

Your mouth does more than you think. Mouth breathing isn’t something to simply “grow out of.”

It can be a sign that something deeper is going on with breathing, oral function, or muscle patterns.

Over time, chronic mouth breathing may impact:
• Facial growth & jaw development
• Sleep quality
• Focus & behaviour
• Dental health
• Tongue posture & swallowing

An open-mouth posture also makes it difficult for the tongue to rest properly against the palate — an important foundation for healthy oral and airway development.

Snoring. Chapped lips. Dark circles. A dry or stuffy nose. Crowded teeth.

These signs aren’t always random.

Thankfully, mouth breathing is addressable. Looking at the root cause — including nasal breathing, tongue posture, oral function, and muscle patterns — can help restore healthier function.

That’s where myofunctional therapy comes in! Rebuilding the foundations of proper function to support healthy growth and better breathing. 💜

A lot of people have asked about the connection between myofunctional therapy and TMD/TMJ symptoms — so let’s talk about it!
Myofunctional therapy looks beyond simply managing symptoms. It works on how the muscles of the tongue, jaw, lips, and face function together, helping address contributing factors such as muscle tension, oral posture, breathing patterns, and swallowing habits.
By improving these underlying patterns, we can help reduce strain on the jaw and support more balanced, efficient function — which may help alleviate TMD/TMJ symptoms for some people.
Think: less compensating, better function, and addressing contributing factors rather than just chasing the symptoms.
Your jaw doesn’t work in isolation — everything is connected! 🧘‍♂️😮‍💨🧠🌳

“Your child will outgrow it”…

But what if they don’t?

Many signs of airway, breathing, and oral function challenges can seem small at first — but those “little things” can add up over time.

🚩 Snoring
🚩 Mouth breathing
🚩 Restless sleep, frequent waking
🚩 Difficulty eating or swallowing, picky eating
🚩 Low tongue posture
🚩 Crowded teeth

These aren’t things to simply ignore or wait years to address. The way a child breathes, sleeps, eats, and rests their tongue can play an important role in their overall growth and development.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on supporting healthy oral function through targeted exercises and education — helping children build the foundations they need for proper breathing, swallowing, and tongue posture.

Early support matters. 💜

If you’ve ever wondered whether your child’s “little habits” are worth looking into, trust your instincts.

🤔 Fun Fact Friday 🧐
Did you know your tongue is actually part of your core? 👅
Your tongue isn’t just for talking and eating—it plays a surprisingly important role in the deep muscles involved in breathing, posture, and core stability for how your entire body functions.
When your tongue rests in the correct position (gently suctioned to the roof of your mouth), it can help:
💜 Support healthy nasal breathing
💜 Promote better head, neck, and spinal alignment
💜 Improve swallowing function
💜 Contribute to core stability and posture
💜 Support healthy jaw development and function
Because the tongue is connected to muscles and fascia throughout the body, what happens in your mouth doesn’t stay in your mouth! A low resting tongue posture can contribute to compensations that affect breathing, posture, and even muscle tension over time.
Small changes in tongue posture can make a big difference in how your body works as a whole.

The symptoms you’re noticing today may have started years ago 👀

A child who mouth breathed…
A tongue that rested low…
A swallow pattern that developed differently…
A habit that seemed “small” at the time…

These patterns don’t always show up right away.

Sometimes they appear years later as:
➡️ crowded teeth
➡️ repeated dental concerns
➡️ speech challenges
➡️ poor sleep
➡️ jaw tension
➡️ chewing difficulties
➡️ posture changes

Myofunctional therapy looks beyond the symptom — we look at the function behind it.

Because breathing, tongue posture, swallowing, chewing, and facial muscles all work together.

If you’ve been wondering whether your breathing or oral habits may be affecting your health, a myofunctional therapy consultation can help identify what’s happening and where to start.

Book your consult today and take the first step toward better function. 📅
