Today, we remember the children who never returned home from residential schools.

We honour Survivors, their families and the generations who continue to carry the impacts of the residential school system. We honour, too, the languages, cultures, ceremonies, Traditional Knowledge and ways of being that residential schools sought to take away—and which Indigenous Peoples continue to protect, reclaim, practice and pass to future generations.

At SOAHAC, we hold space today for remembrance, reflection, culture and healing.

Our offices are closed today to provide our staff with space to observe and honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in ways that are meaningful to them.

To the children who never came home: we remember you.

To Survivors, families and communities: we honour you.

To the generations yet to come: may culture, language, knowledge and identity continue to be carried forward.

Every Child Matters—today and every day.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

It is a day to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, honour Survivors and their families, and recognize the generations who continue to live with the impacts of the residential school system. These impacts are not confined to history, and they continue to be felt within families, communities and the systems Indigenous people encounter today.

At SOAHAC, our approach to health and healing is Indigenous-led and grounded in culture, community and connection. We understand that physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are interconnected, and that Indigenous knowledge, culture and Traditional Healing have an essential place in wholistic care.

As September 30 approaches, we encourage everyone to make time for more than remembrance. Listen to Survivors and Indigenous voices. Learn about residential schools and their continuing impacts. Seek out resources created by Indigenous Peoples and organizations. Consider what reconciliation asks of you, your workplace and the systems in which you participate.

On September 30, wear your orange shirt in honour of the children, Survivors, families and communities at the heart of this day. Carry that learning and responsibility beyond September 30.
