Unpopular opinion:
Popcorn is NOT a safe snack for children under 4.
I know it's cheap.
I know it's a favorite movie snack.
I know "we ate it and turned out fine."
But popcorn is considered a serious choking hazard for young children.
The shape, texture, and hard kernels can easily get stuck in a child's airway. And unlike some foods, popcorn can be especially dangerous because pieces can be inhaled into the lungs.
A few seconds of fun isn't worth a trip to the ER.
There are plenty of safer snack options for toddlers.
So if your child is under 4, skip the popcorn.
Some safety rules might seem overprotective until they're the reason a child stays safe.
This is one of those rules I'll never ignore.
