Iron plays a critical role in neurotransmitter metabolism, specifically in the production and regulation of dopamine and norepinephrine. When iron is deficient (ferritin below 45), even before full anemia develops patients commonly report:

🧠Decreased cognitive function
🧠Difficulty multitasking
🧠Impatience and restlessness
🧠Loss of motivation
🧠Mood disturbances

🚨Some patients were inappropriately diagnosed with mood disorders that resolved with iron supplementation.

These symptoms are strongly tied to executive function, as dopamine and norepinephrine are key neurotransmitters involved in attention, planning, emotional regulation, and impulse control.

Additionally, the research highlights that iron concentrates in areas of the brain associated with pleasure, reward, and emotional regulation.

Why we care about this so much?

Iron screening is not done routinely and checking hemoglobin alone is not enough.

In an ideal world if you are experiencing shifts in cognitive function, mood, sleep, or energy a full iron panel would be assessed in addition to your hemoglobin.

The WHO acknowledges iron deficiency without anemia as a ferritin below 30-45. If a ferritin screen is missed, or interpreted as low risk, you might remain symptomatic if you do not supplement accordingly.

Have you had your iron checked recently?

Acupuncture activates the body’s own pain-regulation systems. It works by affecting the brain, nervous system, and inflammatory pathways.

Clinical trials show it provides meaningful pain relief, especially when used as part of a broader treatment plan.

How it can specifically help:

Supports the release of your body’s natural painkillers
- your body releases endorphins to ease pain

It changes the way your brain processes pain
- pain feels less intense and less overwhelming

It changes the way your nervous system regulates pain
- your nervous system actively turns pain signals down

Local effects
- reduced inflammation and improved blood flow help to manage pain at the tissue site

Acupuncture doesn’t just mask pain, it helps your body regulate it.

This is why it works best as part of a bigger plan, not a quick fix.

As women we are often in transitional seasons in life, this is the way our hormones impact us. Whether it is a fundamental shift like pregnancy or menopause or the monthly shift we experience with our menstrual cycles.

These shifts are physical, cognitive, and emotional. Your patience, your focus, your ability to plan, start, or finish things, these are all impacted in times of change.

PMS.
Infertility.
Pregnancy.
Postpartum.
Perimenopause.
Postmenopause.

And too often, you’re met with:

“it’s just stress”
“that’s part of being a mom”
“that’s common for women your age”

But here’s an example of what is happening:

Estrogen directly interacts with dopamine, one of the primary neurotransmitters responsible for focus, motivation, and executive function.

So when estrogen fluctuates or declines, your brain’s ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through can change.

Not imagined.
Not a personal failing.
Physiological.

And for many women, this experience feels like :
“why can’t I function the way I used to?”

The problem isn’t that this happens. The problem is that no one explains it.

Because when it’s dismissed as “normal,” you’re left without:
– language for what’s changing
– tools to support your brain
– or permission to adjust your expectations

What changes when you’re actually heard:

You can start to identify patterns
(notice when your brain feels different across your cycle or life stage)

You can support what’s modifiable
(blood sugar, sleep, targeted nutrients, nervous system load)

And most importantly
you can stop blaming yourself for something that has a biological root.

This is where an ND can shift the experience.

Not by minimizing it as “just hormones” but by connecting the dots between your hormones, your brain, and your day-to-day capacity.

So you can work with your physiology, instead of constantly feeling like you’re falling short of it.

You’re not failing your routines.
Your brain is responding to a different internal environment.

And you deserve care that will account for that.

Perimenopause isn’t defined by missed periods. It’s defined by hormonal shifts, and those shifts often show up as symptoms before your cycle changes.

So yes, you can be experiencing perimenopause even though your cycle is still regular.

Common symptoms:
•disrupted sleep
•mood swings or anxiety is increasing
•increased anger or irritability
•changes in memory or focus
•changes in your ability to organize and plan

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada confirm: early perimenopause is about these subtle changes, not skipped periods.

If you don't have a provider or have been told by your provider there isn't anything they can do and it's part of this season of life, we can help.

Working with a Naturopathic Doctor, we can begin some baseline assessments.

•we can track symptoms, identifying what you are experiencing and to what degree.
•we can discuss what prevention of chronic disease looks like when entering a hormonal transition that affects your metabolism.
•we can help you support your sleep, your mood, executive function (organizing, planning and memory).

Feeling off, but your period is “normal”? That’s your cue to start the conversation. We are here to listen.
