I’m sharing this with my son’s permission in hopes that it can help another having similar issues.
My son had extremely crooked teeth but more importantly he had chronic breathing issues, sleep apnea and nightly bed wetting issues. Because I am a Myofascial Release therapist I knew enough about the body to know that there were deeper issues here I just didn’t know how to connect the dots. An article that a fellow therapist Jennifer Spak posted (thank you Jennifer) helped confirm this suspision. Going from dentist to orthodontist for 3 years, what they wanted to do was pull teeth and eventually put braces on. The final dentist recommended pulling 6 teeth and I said absolutely not. I knew this was not the solution so I kept digging. I eventually made an on line appointment with a Myofunctional Therapist based out of Kingston named Alex Clinton. She did a full assessment including postural pictures, video of him sleeping, chewing etc and concluded that he needed to see an Airway Focused Dentist. We ended up going to Tabbera Dentistry in London Ontario and they were absolutely amazing. They assessed that due to his high pallet his sinuses were being compressed and blocking off his breathing. This lead to mouth breathing in the night keeping his nervous system in fight or flight which produces the urine hence the bed wetting. By simply pulling teeth and putting braces on, this would not correct the pallet issues, his face would continue to elongate to try and get air in and he would continue to have chronic issues leading to possible neck and body pain and heart issues due to sleep apnea. I can confirm this because I have treated many clients in their 40’s who have the same issues and history.
Treatment started with having an undiagnosed tongue tie released. My son was 13 at this point. Within 1.5 months his face started widening and his bed wetting was cut in half. Within the next 2 months they put special braces on him that they said was a newer technology that expanded the pallet at the same time as straightening the teeth. Within 1.5 months of the braces going on his bed wetting completely stopped and no more sleep apnea. For the first months there were bimonthly appointments gradually hooking up more of his teeth that were jammed up high or hidden behind other teeth as the pallet expanded. Monthly appointments were made in the last 6 months or so and they finally attached elastics to pull his bottom jaw forward which worked better than expected.
After 18 month this is the final result aesthetically and NOT A SINGLE TOOTH WAS REMOVED!!!.
With the help of some very passionate and dedicated professionals and parents that would not give up when we knew something was not right, our son’s life is changed forever.
If any of this sounds or looks familiar please investigate because the results are life changing. And of course if anyone has questions please reach out. I am happy to assist.
With so much gratitude to the whole team and my husband who drove him to every appointment for 18 months.
