At Willow Creek we talk a lot about food, movement, sleep, and the bodyโs remarkable ability to heal when it is given the right conditions. One of the biggest barriers to that healing state is rarely discussed in the gym or the kitchen: ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐.
Living paycheck to paycheck is one of the most exhausting ways a human being can live. The constant low-grade (or high-grade) fear about whether the next bill can be paid, whether an unexpected expense will sink you, or whether you will ever get ahead keeps the nervous system in a prolonged stress response. That stress response is not just โin your head.โ It shows up in cortisol rhythms, inflammation markers, sleep quality, decision-making, and the very metabolic environment we are trying to optimize with proper nutrition.
If the goal is self-healing, then reducing the chronic activation of the stress axis is not optional. Financial peace needs to be a part of the foundation.

Financial strain is not a soft, lifestyle inconvenience. Research consistently links it to worse mental and physical health outcomes across the lifespan.
Multiple large reviews and meta-analyses show that financial stress is associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and serious psychological distress. It is also linked to elevated risk of cardiovascular events, high blood pressure, poorer self-rated health, and markers of biological aging. One U.K. study found that financial strain was among the stressors most strongly associated with high-risk profiles of inflammation and stress hormones years later. People reporting financial stress were nearly 60 percent more likely to fall into the highest-risk biological category.
Chronic activation of the HPA axis (the bodyโs central stress system) elevates cortisol. Over time this contributes to insulin resistance, abdominal fat accumulation, immune dysregulation, disrupted sleep, and a pro-inflammatory state โ the opposite of the calm, regenerative environment that allows keto and carnivore approaches to deliver their full benefits. In functional and holistic health terms, you cannot fully heal while the body remains convinced it is under threat.
The practical takeaway is simple: reducing financial chaos is a legitimate health intervention.

I used to live paycheck to paycheck. I thought that was just how life worked on the incomes we earned. Then I found an app called YNAB โ You Need A Budget.
YNAB is a zero-based budgeting system. Every dollar you have is given a job before the month begins. You stop asking โCan I afford this?โ in the moment and start asking โDoes this dollar already have a job that matters more?โ It completely rewired how I looked at and spent money.
I went from watching the account hover near zero to watching it grow. I introduced the system to my girlfriend at the time โ who is now my wife. Together we have bought a house, opened a business, and purchased our vehicles without taking on debt beyond the mortgage. From the salaries we were making, that would have sounded impossible before. Today we are able to live on a single family income while raising and homeschooling our children.
Managing money is a skill. Without it, many people feel permanently trapped โ as if saving is something that only happens to other people. It is not. The skill can be learned, and the results compound.
If YNAB is not your style, that is fine. There is another powerful tool that requires no subscription and builds the same core muscle: intentional restraint.

In a recent conversation that circulated widely, the advice was straightforward: if money feels tight, try the 30-day Buy Nothing Challenge. We like the idea so much that we recommend stretching it to one to three months. Habits around spending take longer than thirty days to rewire.

For the next 30โ90 days you will buy nothing except the true essentials: food (real food (Prepared at home), not restaurant meals or snacks out), housing costs (rent or mortgage), necessary transportation fuel (Meaning if you can walk or ride a bike do it, its better for your health and your wallet, dress for the weather), insurance, and non-negotiable utilities or medical needs. Everything else is off-limits.
When you leave the house, do not bring payment methods. This removes the frictionless impulse. If you truly need something essential later, you can return with intention.
Prepare meals at home. This single habit eliminates a huge category of unconscious spending while simultaneously supporting the animal-based nutrition we prioritize, you will eat better and spend less, use one day a week to meal prep for the week, making following a plan easy.
Keep a simple running total of the money that stayed in your account because you said no. Watching the number grow is motivating.
At the end of the period, evaluate. Many people discover they can live on far less than they believed. That knowledge is powerful.
The deepest benefit is not the money saved in thirty or ninety days. It is the muscle you build. There are a hundred things you can spend money on and only one โnothing.โ The modern environment is engineered to reward every action except the one that builds long-term security: restraint. Doing the challenge trains the exact capacity most people lack.
When you realize how little you actually need to live well, something shifts. The fear of โwhat if I lost everythingโ becomes concrete and manageable: โI lived on a few hundred dollars a month and it was not that bad.โ That reduces the perceived downside of taking healthy risks โ starting a business, changing careers, investing in your health, or simply sleeping better at night.
You may also notice that many of the things you thought would make you happy are already present, or that the constant acquisition was a distraction from the life you already have.
True health is multi-layered. The highest-quality animal foods, stable blood sugar, strength training, sunlight, and restorative sleep form the physical foundation. But if the mind is running constant threat assessments about money, the body never fully exits survival mode.
Learning to manage money โ whether through a structured system like YNAB or through deliberate periods of buying nothing โ is not separate from health. It is one of the most practical ways to lower the chronic stress load that sabotages healing.
You do not need a high income to begin. You need the willingness to treat every dollar with intention and to practice saying no long enough for new habits to form. The results compound in the bank account and in the body.
Start where you are. Choose the tool that fits. Then give it enough time to change how you see money โ and how your nervous system experiences daily life. Get really good at identifying liabilities and assets, always spend your time and money on assets, not liabilities. Get rid of video games and use the time to read or acquire new skills that will make you more of an asset and less of a liability for the ones that rely on you. Live a life of purpose not one of distraction.
