A Previvor Warrior is someone who has an elevated predisposition to being diagnosed with cancer due to a risk running through their family, and has opted to undergo prophylactic treatment as a preventative measure. This treatment may include a mastectomy, with or without reconstruction, hormonal therapy or a combination of the two. Empowering Prevention and Embracing Life! My Cancer Battle started in my late 20s based on my family immediate family cancer history I was referred to a Genetics Counsellor by my family Doctor. Once I turned 30 I was diagnosed with high risk for breast cancer and enrolled in the high risk breast cancer screening program in Ontario. Which entailed a MRI and mammogram every 6 months for the rest of my life. Well this got old fast, I recall being in the high risk screening program for about 4-5 years, when Doctors discovered abnormal growths and lymphs nodes, which warranted a follow up utrasound and a biopsy. Which at the time was negative, but thats when my mind switch to "not if I will get Cancer to when". My next round of test showed the same abnormal growth, and warranted another ultrasound to investigate further. At this time in my life my mother breast cancer returned and my father just had died of colon cancer. I was JUST in the same waiting room with him for his scans, now I am in the same waiting room, waiting, waiting for my cancer diagnose. No, nope, not going to happen, I was DONE. With the advise from my medical team, on August 14, 2017, at the age of 35, (on my predeceased Grandmothers birthday, whom also had Breast Cancer) I underwent a prophylactic bilateral skin-sparing nipple-saving double mastectomy and reconstruction. Breast Cancer does not define my future, I DO! I won my battle with Breast Cancer, please tell me yours!
