Sensory clutter maintains higher baseline arousal as the nervous system processes visual and physical input continuously, at a cost. Children with fewer toys engage in longer, more complex, more imaginative play, the kind that builds executive function, narrative thinking, and social reasoning. The brain needs something to work with. Scarcity creates creativity. For children with unintegrated primitive reflexes or sensitized nervous systems, sensory clutter is a constant, invisible regulatory drain. Bedtime mistakes that keep the sympathetic nervous system activated, making sleep neurologically impossible. Sleep cannot happen from a sympathetic dominant state. The transition from alert to sleep requires a specific sequence of neurological shifts: cortisol clearance, melatonin rise, circadian alignment, and parasympathetic onset. Each of these has specific triggers, and most common bedtime mistakes work directly against them. Bright light delays melatonin. Stimulating activity keeps cortisol elevated. Screen use activates the sympathetic system. Keeping children up past their cortisol window triggers a second cortisol rise, the overtired 'second wind' that makes sleep much harder to access. An unintegrated Moro reflex adds another layer: it keeps the nervous system in a state of heightened alert and makes the transition between sleep cycles more likely to result in full waking. Before academics, kids need primitive reflex integration, self-regulation, and sensory tolerance, these are the skills that actually predict school readiness. The children who thrive in preschool aren't necessarily the ones who know the most. They're the ones whose nervous systems can tolerate the sensory environment, manage transitions, sustain attention in a group, and recover from disappointment without complete dysregulation. Integrated primitive reflexes underlie postural stability for sitting, eye coordination for tracking, bilateral integration for fine motor tasks, and auditory processing for following group instructions. A child entering preschool with significant active reflexes will struggle - not because they aren't intelligent, but because the neurological foundation isn't yet ready. Sensory tolerance, transition practice, and whole-body movement in the months before preschool build the foundation that academic preparation cannot replace. Letters and numbers matter.
