Keystone Eldercare Solutions

Keystone Eldercare Solutions Vancouver Island, BC - Geriatric Case Manager and Author helping family and seniors navigate systems

Private geriatric case management is still a new concept in Canada. In the simplest of terms, family caregivers and seniors use our services when they need advice and help navigating a health care crisis or age-related transition. We also provide on-going support and management to coordinate the broad range of services needed to make sure seniors are receiving the right type of support at the righ

t time. We are the “keystone”; the service that connects and supports clients to all the various but related parts of eldercare. We can help when your Mom is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and needs more help to stay in her home safely but you don’t know what needs to be done, where to turn for support or where to find the information you need. Or your Dad suffers a stroke and doesn’t have other family locally to care for him when he leaves hospital. Sometimes you just need someone to coach you in your new role of caregiver – including how to initiate uncomfortable conversations with aging parents, how to navigate the complex social and health care systems, and where to find support.

Forty years ago today I became an RN.
Looking back, I know I've never stayed in one lane for very long—and I wouldn't have wanted to.

Over four decades I've worked in surgical units, cardiac care, major emergency departments, remote communities, home care, hospice, case management, long-term care leadership, nursing education, and even as a remote nurse at several different camps for months for many summers and on an island for years.

Along the way I homeschooled three amazing children, cared for my own parents, mentored new nurses, and discovered that helping older adults navigate healthcare is where my experience comes together best.
Every role taught me something.

Today I have the privilege of leading Keystone Eldercare Solutions, where I get to combine everything I've learned to help older adults and their families make confident decisions.

Forty years has gone by incredibly quickly. I still love nursing and knew I wanted to be one by age 9—it just looks different now than it did in 1986.
Here's to the next chapter although not another 40 years!

Why should dementia care partners learn the parts of the brain?

Because dementia is not random behavior.
It is brain change.

When we understand what part of the brain is being affected, we begin to understand why our loved one may be acting differently, speaking differently, seeing the world differently, or struggling with tasks that once felt simple.

A person with frontal lobe involvement may lose impulse control, judgment, motivation, or social filters.

A person with temporal lobe damage may struggle with language, memory, recognition, or emotional processing.

Parietal lobe changes can affect spatial awareness, dressing, navigation, and sensory integration.

Occipital lobe involvement may lead to visual misinterpretations, shadows, hallucinations, or difficulty recognizing objects.

Cerebellar changes may impact balance, coordination, movement, and fine motor skills.

Brainstem involvement can affect sleep, swallowing, breathing rhythms, alertness, and nervous system regulation.

This matters because behavior is communication.

The brain is telling us something.

When caregivers understand the “why” behind the symptoms, they stop seeing the person as stubborn, difficult, lazy, manipulative, or noncompliant.

Instead, they begin responding with strategy, compassion, adaptation, and neuroscience-informed care.

Dementia care becomes less about correcting the person…
and more about supporting the changing brain.

Knowledge changes frustration into understanding.
And understanding changes the entire caregiving journey.
