🌧️ Hundreds missing as devastating flash floods strike the Nepal-Tibet border.
At least 31 people have been reported killed, while hundreds remain unaccounted for after a powerful flash flood and mudslide swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district, close to the border with Tibet.
Among those authorities are urgently trying to locate are hundreds of tourists and travellers.
The Nepal Tourism Board said work is under way to establish the whereabouts of 291 foreign tourists and 93 Nepalese nationals, including guides, who were known to be in or travelling through the area when the flood struck.
The foreign travellers include 12 people from the UK, as well as visitors from the United States, Malaysia, South Africa, India, Australia and the Netherlands.
The torrent surged through communities along the Bhote Koshi River, sweeping away buildings and causing severe damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Preliminary reports suggest an earthquake may have contributed to an avalanche or landslide upstream, sending a huge volume of water and debris into the river. Authorities are still working to establish exactly what caused the disaster.
Search and rescue operations are continuing as families in Nepal and around the world wait desperately for news.
