How Did Pride Month Start? π³οΈβπ
Pride Month traces its roots to the Stonewall Uprising in New York City.
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn resisted a police raid. The protests that followed became a turning point in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.
One year later, marches were held to mark the anniversary of the uprising, and over time these events evolved into Pride celebrations held around the world.
Canada has made significant progress in LGBTQ+ rights over the decades, including legal protection and marriage equality. Pride month in Canada is an opportunity to celebrate that progress while continuing conversations about inclusion, safety, mental health, and belonging.
