Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Su***de prevention is something we can all play a part in.

As our friends at Opening Minds and the Mental Health Commission of Canada remind us, prevention happens through the systems that support us — and in the everyday ways we show up for one another.

It’s listening without judgement. It’s reaching out. It’s creating connection and belonging.

At the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, we believe prevention begins with community — creating circles of support where people feel seen, heard and know they are not alone.

Talking about su***de matters. So does listening. So does reaching out.

We can all play a part.

If you or someone you know is in distress, call or text 9-8-8 for support, 24/7. If there is immediate danger, call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest emergency department.

Mental health literacy is the knowledge and understanding that helps us recognize when someone may be experiencing low mental health — and know how to respond.

We’re proud to support projects like Nova Scotia Community Living Organizations’ Building Community Capacity in Disability Supports: NSCLO ASIST through our Community Grants. This project is bringing su***de intervention training to disability support workers across the province, recognizing the critical role frontline staff play in identifying and responding to the increasing mental health needs of individuals with disabilities.

Training has been hosted in Cape Breton and New Glasgow, with future sessions planned for Kentville and HRM.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities can experience higher rates of mental distress and social isolation, as well as barriers to accessing mental health supports. Disability support workers are often the first to notice changes in behaviour, mood or functioning.

During Su***de Prevention Month, this reflection from one program participant is an important reminder of why building this knowledge and capacity matters:

“Su***de is something close to [me] and I wish I had known what I know now back then.”

Together, we’re increasing the capacity of communities to keep each other safe.

We are proud to call Karen Furneaux a friend — and are grateful for her openness in sharing her mental health story.

From her diagnosis with late-onset bipolar disorder to the experience of being hospitalized and finding her way forward, Karen speaks candidly about some of the most difficult moments of her life — and what helped her through them.

You may know Karen as a three-time Olympian, our 2026 Body Movin’ ambassador or from her powerful conversation on the Keep Talking podcast. On October 6, we’re proud to welcome her as the keynote speaker at Let’s Keep Talking, presented by Bell Let’s Talk.

Join us for an evening of honest conversations about mental health and addiction — and to celebrate Nova Scotians who are helping to keep those conversations going.

Youth can benefit from opportunities to develop their sense of self-worth, build a support network, develop critical thinking, teamwork and communication skills, and have a safe space to express themselves.

We’re proud to support LOVE Nova Scotia’s weekly Media Arts (MAP) sessions, which support positive youth mental health by bringing diverse youth together to work constructively through sharing circles, facilitated group discussions and writing activities. LOVE provides access to youth workers and a social worker for all of their members. Through group and individual support, young people can develop strong relationships with peers and a strong sense of community.

“I’ve found my family – a space where I can be myself and belong.”

Your support helps create more opportunities for young people to find connection, community and a place to belong. Help keep programs like this going by making a donation today: https://mentalhealthns.ca/donate-online/

Some conversations are difficult. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have them.

With funding from the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, Flourish 55+’s Let’s Talk Senior Su***de project created a safe space for older adults to talk openly about mental health, su***de, grief, loneliness and end-of-life planning — while improving mental health literacy and connecting seniors with local resources and support.

“Contrary to popular belief, seniors think about death and dying every day,” says Executive Director Lisa LeBlanc. “They’re okay talking about it. They just need a place where they feel safe enough to do that.”

Read more about the project and its impact in our latest Senior Living column: https://mentalhealthns.ca/senior-living-supporting-seniors-through-difficult-conversations/

Think about the people around you who are making a difference.

The ones who speak up, show up, support others and help make conversations about mental health a little easier.

Chances are, you know someone worth recognizing.

Nominate them for a Let’s Keep Talking Award by Friday, August 28. Help us celebrate the people creating positive change for mental health in Nova Scotia: https://mentalhealthns.ca/events/lets-keep-talking/
