The Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union (NSNU) is a professional union representing over 8,000 Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners in Nova Scotia hospitals, long term care facilities, adult residential centres and community nursing practices. As a member organization of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, we join with 200,000 nurses and student nurses across Canada, ad

vocating for improved patient care, safe and fair working conditions and the protection of the Canadian healthcare system. The NSNU collaborates with other provincial unions on awareness campaigns, and is also affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress. Uniquely, the NSNU is the only union in Nova Scotia that exclusively represents nurses, and the only union representing all three nursing designations.

Nova Scotia is experiencing harsh weather this weekend including heavy rain and high winds, particularly in Cape Breton. Some roads have been washed out, making them impassable. Flooding throughout parts of the island is hazardous.

Please travel with care, exercise caution. Check road conditions before heading out and stay alert.

To all our nurses on the roads, and to all who are working this holiday weekend, be safe.

VON Halifax Local held its meeting at the NSNU last evening, September 3rd.

They were pleased to have one highly active Local member in attendance, Karen Hall, who recently celebrated seven years with VON. Karen is also the recipient of the 2026 IEN Award, an incredible and well-deserved achievement that we’re all very proud to celebrate.

Karen brought the award to the meeting to share this wonderful accomplishment with her fellow NSNU members and coworkers.

The NSNU and VON members are proud to showcase IENs and the tremendous value they bring to our workplaces, our teams, and the people in their care.

NSNU STATEMENT on NCLEX FEEs

Since it was announced late last week that that the cost to write the NCLEX licensure exam, the standardized test used by nursing regulatory boards to determine if a candidate is safe and competent to practice as an entry-level nurse, I have heard from many within the nursing community who oppose the increase. I agree with them, whole heartedly.

Nova Scotia needs more nurses. We should be doing everything we can to support nursing graduates as they enter the profession, not add barriers to practice.

The national exam fee is set to increase from $360 to $570 in February. That is a significant jump for new graduates who face student debt and an unprecedented cost of living.

We recognize that some adjustment may be necessary. However, an increase of more than $200 places an unfair burden on future nurses. NSNU is calling for the decision to be reconsidered or, at the very least, for any increase to be implemented gradually.

Efforts to expand the nursing workforce are undermined when the pathway to licensure grows more costly.
