Fun Fact Friday – Speech & Hearing Month Edition! 🗣️👂🏼

Many people after stroke experience word-finding difficulties, sometimes called anomia.
Often, the person knows exactly what they want to say — but retrieving the word can take extra time and effort. This can be frustrating and exhausting, especially during fast-paced conversations.

Speech therapy may help individuals develop strategies for word retrieval, while supportive communication partners can help by slowing down conversations, giving extra time to respond, and reducing pressure to “get the word out” quickly.

Patience and understanding can make a meaningful difference in communication!

Our Annual May Tea Party 🫖🌸

One of our favourite spring traditions returned this week — the DSRS Annual May Tea Party. Each year, this special gathering brings together members, caregivers, families, friends, volunteers, and familiar faces from years past for an afternoon of connection, conversation, and celebration. It has become not only a springtime tradition, but also a wonderful volunteer reunion and a reminder of the strong community that surrounds DSRS.

From the beautiful bone china, to the laughter shared around the tables, to the delicious food prepared with so much care, the afternoon was truly food for the soul.

A special thank you to Ossie’s Deli for catering the tea sandwiches, and to our incredible volunteers for the many homemade treats and all the work that helped make the day so memorable.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon so special 💙

For over 10 years, our South Delta Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) group has brought members together each Tuesday morning to practice communication skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Led by our SLP, Shari, alongside a wonderful group of future SLPs, members work hard each week to strengthen their speech, language, confidence, and communication strategies following stroke.

Just as important as the therapy itself is the peer support shared within the group. Members encourage one another, celebrate progress together, and create a welcoming space where everyone feels understood and supported.
We’re so proud of the hard work, determination, and resilience shown by this group week after week 💙

Thank you to Shari and the student clinicians for the care, knowledge, and encouragement they bring to the program!

Fun Fact Friday – Speech & Hearing Month Edition! 🗣️👂🏼

Did you know that the brain can continue to adapt and form new connections after stroke?

This ability, called neuroplasticity, is one reason speech and language therapy can be so important during recovery. Through consistent practice and meaningful communication activities, the brain can strengthen and reorganize pathways involved in speech, language, cognition, and swallowing.

Recovery looks different for everyone, and progress may happen gradually over time — but every conversation, practice opportunity, and connection matters.

During Speech & Hearing Month, we’re celebrating the importance of communication, connection, and continued growth 💙

This week, our North Delta members had the opportunity to participate in a full Qigong session together.

Qigong is a gentle mind-body practice that combines slow movement, breathing, balance, and focus. Research suggests that practices like Qigong may support mobility, coordination, relaxation, and overall well-being.

Beyond the physical benefits, it was also a wonderful opportunity to slow down, connect, and move together in a calm and supportive environment.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the session such a positive experience 💙

Fun Fact Friday – Speech & Hearing Month Edition! 🗣️👂🏼

Did you know it’s Speech and Hearing Month?

Speech therapy after stroke can support much more than just speech.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) may help individuals with communication, thinking and memory skills, reading and writing, voice, and swallowing difficulties following stroke.

Communication plays an important role in maintaining relationships, participating in daily life, and supporting overall quality of life. Therapy is often personalized to each individual’s goals, strengths, and needs throughout recovery.

During Speech & Hearing Month, we’re recognizing the many ways communication support can help individuals stay connected, engaged, and empowered after stroke 💙

Last week, our members had the opportunity to participate in a drum circle together — an engaging activity filled with music, movement, laughter, and connection.

Activities involving rhythm and music can support coordination, attention, communication, and emotional well-being, while also creating opportunities for social connection and self-expression.
Most importantly, it was a chance to come together, try something new, and simply enjoy the moment.

There was plenty of rhythm, energy, and smiling all around 🥁

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that enjoying the things you love — even something as simple as a sweet treat — can have a positive impact on your well-being.

Research shows that pleasurable experiences activate the brain’s reward system, which can support mood, motivation, and overall emotional health. Small moments of enjoyment can also help reduce stress and bring a sense of balance to daily life.

Whether it’s sharing dessert with friends, celebrating a birthday, or simply treating yourself, these moments matter too.

A little joy goes a long way 🍰

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that spending time in the sun can do more than just brighten your day?

Sunlight helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm), which plays an important role in energy levels, mood, and overall brain function. It also supports the body’s production of vitamin D, which is linked to brain and bone health.

Getting outside for even a short period each day — whether it’s a walk, fresh air, or simply sitting in the sun — can have meaningful benefits over time.

A little sunshine can go a long way ☀️💙
