It’s hard to believe that today marks 10 years of being in practice. I am grateful and humbled by the learning and growth I as a practitioner have experienced over this decade as a result of my colleagues, my team and my patients. I count it as a privilege that I have walked with, and continue to walk with, patients through their healing journeys. Thank you to those who have stood beside me, supported me, and helped me to battle my giants along the way. No man is an island, and I am beyond blessed to be surrounded by so much love and support. My hope is that I can continue to impart this love and support that I have received, to others.

Sometimes you need someone to walk (or bike) beside you through it, to motivate you, to call you out and call you higher. It’s ok to ask for help and support. I was cooking with my son when he was much smaller than he is now. I had set a pepper on the counter, went to grab something and next thing you know this is what I saw. At first I was a caught off guard and could not believe he would eat a pepper like that! But it hit me, maybe we need to take a different perspective, and think outside the box when it comes to things like veggie intake and our health.

Stress is an interesting thing. It can be good stress or bad stress, but it can result in the same physical outcome for our bodies.
Recently I have undergone some increased stress with the loss of a family member. I thought I was managing pretty well and then I noticed one thing: I wasn’t hungry and was starting to skip meals. In the past when I would be under great deals of stress, this was a common tendency for me that I fed into (pardon the pun). I would neglect eating, and when I would eat, it was minimal at best. As a result I felt worse and my threshold for the stress was far less.
It is so important to know our symptom picture when it comes to stress because it helps us to identify when we need more support, resources or self care. For me, I have to force myself to eat at appropriate times even when I am not hungry, because it helps me to combat the stress and mental game more effectively. What tendencies do you notice with stress? What old habits rear their head in the wake of stress for you?

Whatever your health goal, just Start. I know what you’re thinking, “Really Dr Cook? It’s the long weekend. That’s the last thing on my mind.”
There is always going to be something that deters us from our journey or may take precedence. But if we can establish routines and patterns through these seasons, we can maintain them when times are “less busy” as well.
Sometimes we just need to take that step and start somewhere. Maybe it’s going for one walk, eating one salad, booking that one appointment. Whatever it looks like for you, just start. You won’t regret it ❤️

“I need to take a deep breath in and out. I’m stressed mommy” was what I heard in the back seat. At first I felt distress hearing this, “why is my little guy stressed? Have I been showing signs of stress that my kids have picked up on?” Were some of the whirling thoughts I had, but then I stopped and paused. I realized that yes he had been exposed to me being stressed, but he also saw mama do some self care.
This reminded me how important it is for us to practice self care and make it a common conversation in the home. In order to help our family, they need to see us helping ourselves. So the next time you feel guilty taking time for self care, remind yourself that you are helping others to self care too.

I think sometimes we feel like life would be easier if we had an instruction manual for our health. “If X happens, do Y”. But in all reality, you are a unique person. One guide would not work for everyone. That’s why it is so important to talk to a health care provider that looks at you as a unique individual person. Naturopathic doctors do just that.
